This beer has been sitting, winking at me with its wildflower honey eyes while gently stroking its fingers through my hair telling me patience is a virtue. I await in tremendous excitement until tonight, the unveiling of something magical and well received by the advocate community.

Appearance:
The bottle is in a very nice, sleek design and popping the cork is always a pleasure. I was looking forward to the bottle (or second) fermentation with the Belgian yeasts and deep rich honey-malt (but we shan't get ahead of ourselves...we are still only on appearance). A top grade performance head forms right off the bat and I knew that some magic definitely went down while this bottle sat of the shelf. By the 20 minute mark there was not more than a 1 cm head, but it was a dirty snow color. Lacing was prevalent and very aesthetically pleasing.

Smell:
Smack in the face of Belgian yeast fruitiness followed by more sweet from the malt and honey. There isn't much in regards to the hops...but if you tell me they're in there..I believe you. I do find trace aldehyde/acetone remnants, but I appreciate the added complexity. Mixed with the sweetness...totally cherry red nail polish + the remover.

Taste:
Fruity, deep, rich, flavorful, Belgian, smooth. There is no reason to use full sentences, I like this beer's interpretation and enjoy the simplicity of ingredients that have been used for 1000s of years. A gulp leaves you knowing the beer is indeed beer and here to receive excellent ratings and reviews.

Mouthfeel:
Smooth, creamy, and almost completely balanced. It's definitely leaning towards that aldehyde, but dammit there is a certain amount of risk with bottle fermenting and I appreciate you making the effort to take risks. Good ingredients smooth out everything into something easily drinkable. I must comment on the carbonation (plentiful), which helps everything rise above expectations yet bite on the way down.

Drinkability:
Affordable goodness. I would absolutely put this beer amongst classics and will be more open-minded to Brooklyn's beers in the future. Splitting this bottle will not be a burden on your night if you have other things to get done after dinner, but will cap off the night after a day's intensity nicely.

Cheers.

Bottled 2992 (October 18, 2012); Consumed April 22, 2014

A: Pours a deep ruby/mahogany color with a big fluffy head that very slowly settles down to 1+ finger of foam that leaves some nice lacing

S: Belgian yeast, dark fruits, floral and earthy hops, and a bit of spiciness all stand out

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a light yeastiness along with some spiciness and dark fruits. A nice floral undertone plays well throughout, while some caramel and dark chocolate maltiness lends some sweetness. Finishes with some subdued spiciness and citrus notes

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A little on the prickly side, which works

O: Extremely easy to drink at 9% (I'll give the age some credit for that) and a really nicely rounded American-made BSDA. At under $9 for a 750 mL, it's also a really good deal (in terms of larger format bottles, obviously). Definitely worth trying

Picked up this to try because I have had luck with Brooklyn. Split with good friend and guru. Outstanding smell and taste an is scary easy to drink for something that is 9%, unreal. I will certainly be buying this again as it was a pretty good value at $9.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer pours a mahogany brown color with two fingers of a tan colored head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer has a big strong dark fruity smell composed of some aromas of raisin, plum and red grapes. Along with these aromas are smells of yeast, which bring with them aromas of banana and a bit of a spice smell of clove and coriander. Other aromas of a honey sweetness as well as some orange and candied sugar are there as well, mixing with the rest, as well as a nice bready and lightly boozy smell, with overall produce a very pleasant fruity and sweet Belgian dark aroma.

Taste – While the taste begins rather sweet it is slightly drier then I was anticipating from the nose. It begins with a nice roasted malt taste mixed with lots of darker fruit flavors. The heaviest dark fruit flavor is that of a cherry taste, but other big raisin and plum flavors are mixed with it. Right from the start there are some other sweeter flavors of a more candied sugar and honey flavor as well. The darker fruit and candied/honey flavors fade a bit as the taste moves forward with some rather yeasty flavors taking their place. With the advent of the yeast, so too comes flavors banana as well as of spice with coriander, clove, and a little bit of nutmeg all there. These flavors meld quite nicely with the darker fruit flavors and darker roasted malt tastes creating a nice blend of spiced darer fruit and roast. With hints of a boozy alcohol coming to the tongue at the end, one is left with a nice crisp and smooth dark fruit and roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is a bit thinner then I would have anticipated for a Belgian Strong dark of 9 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the higher and more prickly champagne like side. Both are good for creating the nice crisp feel of the brew which complements the slightly drier nature (well for a Belgian Strong Dark at least) well, but yet the body still all the while has enough thickness and oomph to support all the darker flavors of the brew.

Overall – This was a very enjoyable Belgian Strong Dark in my opinion. A nice mix of fruitiness, roastiness, spice, and booze, all with a slightly drier and nice crispness and drinkability.
