750ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a deep chestnut brown with a mild haze. Three fingers of tan head retain very well. Lacing blankets the whole glass.
S: Honeyed bread, orange peel, bit of clove, peppery and spicy yeast, cocoa, a touch musty, floral. Lightly tart. Highly aromatic, the scent of it filled the room immediately after the cork was popped.
T: Sharp clove and peppery spice at the outset. Subtle tartness in the background. Burnt bread crust. Chocolate covered oranges. Bakers chocolate and a bit of bittersweet dark chocolate. Prunes. Slight smoke. Orange peel dominates the mid-palate. Honeyed brown bread. Chalky, earthy, musty yeast. Bit of a floral element. Finishes very dry with cocoa, crust, slight hop oils, and spicy Belgian yeast.
M: Medium bodied. Very creamy. Aggressive carbonation scrubs the palate.
O: A very creative and food-friendly beer. A bit brash and bold at times, especially with the orange peel. Complex, though not in the effortless way that the best Belgians are. It really settled in as my palate adjusted to it though, and it drank very easily. One of the better Belgian-style brews made on american soil.
