A majestic, soapy, and large head in my gold rimmed Brooklyn glass. Good retention and a nice amount of lacing. A cloudy chestnut brown with no bubbling visible.
Smell is dark a dark fruit blend of raisins, figs, plums. Spicy yeast notes. Sweet and roasted malts with banana. Toffee and burnt, sugary alcohol. A underlying buckwheat honey with an orangey facet. A superb blend, just not that big. You have to take relatively deep sniffs.
Taste is beautifully balanced. Dark fruits are countered by roasted malts and a touch of coffee. Banana and light citrus, ( orange ) blend with the honey from the nose. Dark sweet raisin rolls and fruitcake like breadiness. A chocolatey, toasted and buttered scone somewhere in there. Finish is lightly hopped and smooth with a light floral bitterness. Dry. Graham crackers and cocoa on the palate and back of the throat. No trace of alcohol. Feel is silky and velvety. Tingly carbonation moves to light cream and a gentle scrubbing of the mouth. A restorative drink.
Drinkbility is almost criminal. It never shows the abv in the taste and the feel of each sip is sublime.
For me this is what Duvel is to Belgian strong pale ale. What Chimay Reserve ( blue ) is for strong Dark ale. A paradigm. While it does not establish the style, ( as does Duvel ) it certainly lays down a marker of what the style is and should be.
