From the corked, caged bottle no. 0042. Sampled on December 23, 2013. I acquired this as a clearance bottle for $5.99 which I thought was a good deal since I hadn't had it before.

The pour is golden yellow with a white fizzy carbonated head that lingers longer than your typical glass of champagne.

Loads of sparkling grapes, lemon,. and other citrus on the nose intertwined mild roasted malts and a feint hop kick.

Light to medium body with a lot of carbonation that increases what I like refer to as the "belch factor." Yup, plenty of that going on.

The taste is parallels what I get on the nose with a significant lemon zest and citrus zing flavor, mildly toasted malts, and a tart yet dry finish. It is very much like champagne with that slight maltiness to remind me it is a beer.

Poured into a tulip out of a 22oz bottle.

Pours a hazy light straw yellow with a very fluffy, billowy white head. Globs of lacing clinging to the sides of the glass along with amazing head retention.

The aroma is typical of a saison but is very rich. Lots of bread and yeast notes along with a tremendous punch of citrus. A little mustyness along with some lemon and a touch of citrus. Very nice and quite deep.

The flavor is a bit on the light side but is quite nice. Spicy yeast esters along with orange peel and a touch of lemon. Some bread and hay along with grass. Some vanila finishes things up along with a drying finish and a touch of bitterness. Mouthfeel is quite dry with just a little bit of stickyness to end things up.

Overall, a very nice Saison with a twist. The sorachi ace hop lends some very nice citrus notes that compliment the Belgina yeast nicely. A good beer that is worth picking up.

Served from a 750 ml bottle into a goblet.

A - The beer is a very pale yellow or straw color. It is milky but not what I'd call cloudy. The head is thick, active and fluffy and a bright, just off-white color. Lots of lacing. This resembles a Belgian wit more than anything, but looks appropriate for a saison as well.

S - Very interesting and unique aroma. I get mostly black pepper, but there are other indistinct spicy notes behind there that add complexity. There is some citrus at a low level. There is also a bit of grainy pilsner malt.

T - Grainy pilsner malt that is just about overwhelmed by black pepper and lemongrass flavors. Slightly sweet finish. No noticeable hops.

M - Medium to full body. Prickly, aggressive carbonation that is in line with the style. Moderate hops bitterness. Moderate alcohol burn.

O - This is a good saison with some unique flavors that I assume are from the sorachi ace hops. I find it just a bit too heavy in the body, but have no other critiques.

1 pint 9.4 oz bottle; Back of bottle "0083"

The beer poured a hazy orange color that produced a huge white head that was very well retained and faded into a thin cap. Carbonation was streaming to the top of the glass. The beer gave off a very good Belgian yeast aroma and slight citrus, lemon maybe. The taster was excellent, just what you would expect, but with a dry aftertaste. The beer follows the nose perfectly. The beer had a medium body, good carbonation, and it was extremely drinkable and smooth. Overall, very high quality.
