Ah, guys, see, this is why I was happy to see you made it: 'cause there's no way I was gonna be able to get in line for the guest taps while stuck in the food line. Anyway, this stuff pours a nearly impenetrable black-brown topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises cocoa, light roasted malts, vanilla bean, clove, allspice, a hint of coffee, and brown sugar. The taste brings in more of the same, with the roast taking a slightly large role and some pumpernickel showing up for good measure. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly smooth feel. Overall, a damn fine beer, the highlight of the guest taps (from what we sampled, anyway).

This brew was served from the tap at Rattle N’ Hum in New York, NY. It arrived in a becker glass, showing a jet black brew with a thin film of dark brown bubbles atop the liquid. Spotty lacing was left around the glass, and a swirl quickly reproduced this head. No sediment was noted, and the carbonation appeared to be average. The aroma smelled initially of rum and raisons. As we continued to sniff, we noticed a distinct vinegar bite balanced by a cola sweetness. Oatmeal malts and roasted chocolate came through later in the aroma, and with warmth, vanilla extract was noticeable. As we sipped, our first impression was how sour this beer was!! Immediately upon sipping the liquid a lemon-lime sourness crashed in. This sourness became more lactic as the beer warmed. Once the initial shock of the lemon-lime wore off, notes of sweeter cooling vanilla and pumpernickel bread became noticeable. The beer peaked with sour grain and notes of heavy creamer. The end was of distinct powdery baking flour, sugariness and more of that lemon-lime taste; it almost tasted like a flash of Gatorade. These notes were accompanied by chocolate sweetness from the malts, and raw cocoa. The aftertaste breathed of boozy rum, raisons, figs, and chalky malts. Throughout the glass, the beer had a distinct vinegar-like taste, which added to the lactic acidity that was first noticed. The body was medium, and the carbonation was light. There was excellent slurp and cream. Even though the mouth was initially coated, there was a light dryness that followed. The abv was appropriate, and the beer sipped easily.
Overall, our favorite thing about this one was the complex nose. It boasts a nice rum-raison profile. The curious lemon-lime flavoring throughout the beer, however, was peculiar, making the beer almost seem more like a sour, and less like a porter. This is an interesting twist on a classic style, but it just seemed to miss the mark.

Brooklyn Brewery's Cookie Jar Porter pours as black as a nightmare with a thin brown head. Aromas of molasses, & brown sugar hit the nose. In the mouth it feels very thin. On the tongue I get flavors of plum, molasses, and cinnamon, with a hint of nutmeg. These flavors linger with a slight tartness that is refreshing. An excellent beer, should go well with the Steak Pannino at Rattle-n-Hum in NYC

Thanks to Blake (Steamhead) for the chance to sample this, having secreted a keg away for a year. I'm quite taken with this beer. At 7.8% abv, this is quite likely the most deceptively strong beer I've come across. Very smooth with a pronounced milk chocolate note. Oatmeal lends additional softness to the flavor profile. A bit of vanilla and nuttyness toward the finish, which tends to go just a bit thin, but not enough to be distracting. Beguiling.
