Heard about this at the Pony Bar in Manhattan from Chris O'Leary and since I had never tried this nor been to that bar, this was a good reason to take the trek over to the West Side and kill two birds with one stone. Sure enough, this was worth it...even for an 8 oz. serving.

Nice hue and pour to this - an average head, deep copper color, and just enough of an aroma to get me excited for this. This wasn't as much of a hop bomb as I though it would be and had quite the European taste to this - sweet, citrusy, and just a bit warming. The mouthfeel was great and this has the slightest dry-hopped aftertaste. It almost seemed like a cross between an English-style ale and a Belgian Trippel or Quad, with just enough complexity to keep me from quaffing it down.

I was very surprised to see how strong this was when I got on here and looked this beer up. It's not that the alcohol can't be felt, but the flavors and consistency are so nicely balanced that the strength of this beer hides it's potency. Too bad this isn't for sale via retail - this is worth going out of the way to find and savoring nice and slowly. Garrett's got another winner here!

Served in a 9oz snifter for $5.25. Sampled 10/1/10.

A: A small white foamy head provides decent retention. The body has an 80% opacity that provides a color range from rustic orange through auburn, then dark copper at the core. There is a light smathering of lace in broken sedimentary fashion.

S: The nose absolutely bursts with orange, peach and pineapple plus a caramel component that is more than adequate. The crust of dark bread adds depth to the malt foundation.

T: Summer and tropical fruits combine for good flavor duration. Moderate caramelly sweetness and restrained bitterness add a bit of east coast flare to a west coast style. Alcohol comes through meagerly to no real surprise.

M: Medium body with a perfectly lively carbonation.

D: [DRINKABILITY] Detonation is a top echelon DIPA - but only by east coast standards. Easy to drink with enough complexity to add intrigue. Well done Oliver.
