Notes/Commercial Description:
Early American colonialists, seeking natural ingredients for brewing ales, turned to pumpkins, which were plentiful, flavorful and nutritious. Blended with barley malt, pumpkins became a commonly used beer ingredient. Post Road Pumpkin Ale brings back this tasty tradition. Hundreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center, and crisp finish.

Pours a transparent copper color with a substantial head of khaki foam. The mild aroma smells of pumpkin and pumpkin spices--pretty much what you’d expect.

The taste is similar to the nose, though the spices tend to dominate the pumpkin flavor. Cinnamon headlines a potpouri spice profile that tramples a bit on the subtler flavors. There is as much grain husk as there is pumpkin, along with some earthy, peppery hops. The hops blend pretty seamlessly with the spices, but that doesn’t change the reality of the lopsidedness. The vibrant, semi-creamy mouthfeel is probably the best thing this beer has going for it.

Overall, this is an acceptable pumpkin ale that bears many of the hallmarks of the style, but it doesn’t do much to distinguish itself from the finer examples of the style (e.g. Whole Hog).

Purchased at the LCBO as a single $2.50 for a 355ml bottle. Served at 5deg C in a draught glass

A- 4.25- Excellent! Dark gold, lots of head that stays around for a while

S- 4.0- Very good with lots of pumpkin and cinnamon. Almost a slight scotch in there

T- 3.75- Good cinnamon and malt. Pumpkin is a bit subdued

M- 3.5- Bit of a let down here. Pretty much a mass produced metallic tongue

O- 3.92- This the overall rating I want to give. Nice beer. Not great but nice.

Food Pairing

This pretty good pumpkin beer went well with....... Yup! You guessed it! Roasted turkey with stuffing and the works

Enjoy
