Pours a darker off white 1/2 finger slight creamy fizzy head that fades fairly quickly, no real lacing, almost pitch black color pretty much no light coming through.

Nose light roasty malts, light black malt, hint toasty biscuit like malt, caramel. Hops are light but interesting, light earthy grassy, but a hint of minty pine.

Taste starts with dark malts, little chalky and quite dry, black malts with a touch of acrid and slight char, maybe even burnt, that send to come with the powdered flavors. Fair bitterness from light earthy hops, faint hint of pine. Malts also bring light caramel and toasty biscuit. Finish is still quite dry, lingering bitterness with more earthy hops, little chewy hop, light black malt too.

Mouth is med bodied, nice carb, quite dry overall.

Overall not bad, decent malt profile but gets slightly burnt acrid, nice hop addition, etc.

Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout

Once you get past the question of why you'd want an Irish-style stout brewed in the US, you can then ask the question of how good it is.

It's not nitrogenated, although that didn't occur until 1964 with draught Guinness so it's not historic and doesn't really matter here. And it does have a little bit of a sour tang to it, which would be historically accurate, although neither this nor the current Guinness are even nearly as sour as the stouts of yesteryear would have been. I think the twang here is really just from a low pH, and not due to any soured beer added back in as Guinness does.

If you think along the lines of a Guinness Foreign Extra stout with a much lower starting gravity and adjusted bitterness you'll have a pretty good idea of what this beer is about. It's roast and chocolatey, and slightly caramelish. It's about the malt, and there's really just a little bit of hop in the flavor, which is probably not even equal to the fruitiness of the yeast, which is also limited.

It's a difficult beer to formulate in some ways because the style, really, is a bit disjointed. It's got spikes of roastiness, bitterness, and acidity; and there's some of that here but it seems that Brooklyn wanted to try to round it out at least a little bit to make it more drinkable, which it is.

So why would I want an Irish style stout brewed in the US? To celebrate Saint Patricks Day, of course! Although Guinness is seen as quintessentially Irish, it's actually an English company that persecuted the Irish. Arthur was a committed unionist and opponent of Irish nationalism; and his decedents financially supported the Ulster Volunteer Force and allegedly lent men and equipment to the British Army during the Easter Rising of 1916. So this year I'll have a Murphy's, a Beamish, or a Brooklyn... but I won't support Guinness.

Poured into a Guinness pint glass a deep dark chocolate brown with a half finger beige colored head that held pretty well.Aromas consisted mainly of coffee and earth with mild bitter chocolate.A fuller nice feel in the mouth,pretty smooth.Dry and roasted on the palate as it should be,dark roast coffee,unsweetened chocolate,and earthiness mainly stood out.A no frills but pretty true to form Irish stout,I would drink again.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Excellent frothing, three fingers tall. A few shades away from black with ruby highlights. Soft roasty aroma, mild chocolate, chicory, caramel and woody hops in the nose as well. Very smooth, slightly slick, medium bodied. Kiss of roasted grain, mild charcoal, hint of coffee, light sweetness, balanced hoppiness, finishes with a lingering charred note and semi-dry.

Pretty good, I'd still order this over Guinness Draught as that beer has certainly not been up to par with me for a while.

Pours dark brown, dark tan head, stays a bit, and leaves some sheeting and strands and bits of lacing.

Milk chocolate nose, with some vanilla and dark malts.

More chocolate on the palate. Milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, vanilla, roasty malts

Dry finish as advertized...nice new offering from BKLYN

On tap at the Common Table.

The beer pours a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma has a good bit of chocolate in it, as well as a hint of roasted malt. The flavor is very similar. There is a ton of dry cocoa notes in the flavor, as well as some roasted malt. The beer is very dry overall. Thin mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint. My wife says that if I point out that it is a Brooklyn glass, then I am a capital D dork, rather than just a regular dork.

Appearance: Ruby black with initial moderate head, but it mostly dissipates, so that it ultimately looks like coke.

Smell: Smells like dry roasted malts, with touches of char, smoke, coffee and molasses. Some light, floral hops as well.

Taste: Same as the aroma, with light roasted notes of smoke, coffee and burnt molasses. Finish has some light hoppy notes along with the roasted bite.

Feel: Light bodied (as expected) with moderate carbonation. Finish is very dry and crisp.

Overall: Very drinkable, everyday Irish Stout. Enjoyable but doesn't stand out.

I had this on tap. It has a roast nose - coffee and chocolate with some sweet notes. It pours dense black. It has the dry stout roast and burnt barley bitterness but it has traces of sweetness in the background that are separate from the roast. the body is medium full and the carbonation medium.

served on tap into a standard pint glass at Mammoser's Tavern in Hamburg, NY.

nearly black body with about one finger's worth of light tan colored head, faded to nothing after 5 minutes or so.

not too much going on in the aroma, pretty much typical of the style. lightly roasted malts with some slightly sweet toasted malts. only slightly fruity.

very similar to the aroma. sweet toasted malts and some fruity like esters with some light roasted malt.

slightly heavier side of light bodied. carbonation is just a touch on the high side. finishes with a light dry bitter feel.

overall this was pretty average for the style. i feel like a nitro tap would improve this beer overall so much. id gladly take this over guiness, slightly more flavor and body, but really not something i would buy again.

On tap at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul. Served in a standard shaker pint glass. This comes in at 3.9 ABV according to the bar beer menu.

Appearance: Dark black with a little bit of a brownish color on the edges of the glass. Moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of light tan head with decent retention and lots of lacing on the glass.

Smell: A fairly sweet aroma of dark roasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, chocolate, coffee, and nuts. Nice biscuit like smell with some sugar. Light hint of earthy hops in the background.

Taste: A roasty and yeasty taste of dark biscuity malts. Some notes of chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee, sugar, and a little bit of nuts. Light earthy noble hop presence towards the finish. Pretty nice for such a small beer.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth. Starts somewhat sweet and has a drying finish.

Overall: A very good take on an Irish Dry Stout. Very impressive taste for an ABV lower than the typical mass produced light beer.

An excellent session ale found on tap at Mad Mex Robinson, pours a pitch black body with a light khaki tan airy head...fluffy texture forming everlasting head that has great retention. Aroma kicks up mild herbal earthy mint like hop edge, amongst the dark roasted malts, creamy textured hints of dark chocolate and mild coffee but remains pleasantly roasty with malt character. I noticed a non nitro tap which was a plus and actually brought out more character in this beer. Dark roasted malts bring ample bitterness a touch of tea like leafy earthiness going on as well, but a semi sweet multi-dimensional malt complexity comes forth with each sip...hints of creaminess, dark chocolate roasts in a light stout form. Mouthfeel was medium bodied easy to drink, nothing cloying or harsh on the palate very approachable beer to drink in number. Overall, I'm happy to see Brooklyn putting out a stout other than Black Ops, or their Chocolate Stout, this was pure brilliance.

12 oz bottle of "Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout", 4.7% alcohol, served in a Belgian snifter.

A: The beer pours very dark mahogany brown, looking near black in the glass; a deep ruby color is visible at the edges of the glass under bright light. The moderate size, tan colored head soon died down to a thin partial top coat and a durable collar around the edge of the glass, with patchy lacing left on the sides.

Rather simple but attractive aroma of sweet and roasted malts. The taste reveals some subtle but spicy hops mixed with a stronger flavor of dark roasted malts. Sweet, with hints of chocolate up front, and some coffee in the mildly bitter finish.

M: Light+ bodied: about as expected. Some dryness; moderate carbonation.

O: No apparent flaws, but rather mild flavor and not very complex or interesting either.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a tan film of cream on top

S- The mellow roasted black malt is nice but a bit soft

T- The roasted black malt is gentle with a slightly inky note and a slight tartness in the finish.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a scrubbing fizz finish that blends in with the tartness.

O- The tartness starts to overpower the mellow black malt flavor and the overall flavor is a bit light and one-dimensional. I was a bit underwhelmed considering the quality stuff Brooklyn does.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a very, very dark black color, almost pitch black, with a half of a finger of caramel colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed wispy clouds of foam that collected in the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Lots of roasted malty aromas highlighted with smoke, chocolate, vanilla and coffee.

Taste: The stout is front-loaded with flavor, but has practically no finish. Flavors of chocolate-covered coffee beans, sweetened slightly with vanilla and caramel. There’s just a touch of bitterness at the finish, but I don’t know if that’s due to hops or the roasting process. The finish quickly falls away to nothing.

Mouthfeel: Medium to slightly chewy, with some slight carbonation, enough to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of only 4.5% there is no alcohol presence on the palate.

Overall: This is a good example of an Irish Dry Stout, but maybe a little pedestrian compared to other stouts that I’ve had. I enjoyed it, and if offered, will enjoy it again, but I probably won’t go out of my way to look for it.

Another beer to celebrate St Patrick's day. This would poured someone lighter and easier than most Irish Stouts. I could not detect really anything in the nose. The first sip, all I felt was the large amount of carbonation.. That sort took away the taste itself.

This one is dry as advertised.. A very light impression of a Irish Stout.

Still thinking about all the carbonation.

12oz glass @undergroundedm, during the kickoff of their Brooklyn tap takeover.

This beer appears a very dark, almost black brown, with pervasive reddish highlights, and one finger of dense, puffy beige head, which leaves some bubbling chauldron lace around the glass as it genially recedes.

It smells of dry roasted malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, day-old coffee, and muddled citrus, leafy hops. The taste is more of the same, in a goodly way, with the toasty, roasty, and lightly caramelized malt, milk chocolate, a separate lactic sweetness, subtle standing coffee, and very understated citrus and earthy hops.

The bubbles are predictably low-key and underpowered, the body medium-light in weight, mostly smooth (the char seems to interfere here), and a tad creamy overall. It finishes off-dry, the nutty chocolate pushing through the roast.

A tasty enough Irish dry stout, with a fair bit more sweetness than expected, but that doesn't really matter, as it all works together to produce a commendable alternative to you-know-who.

A - Pitch black with a good lasting tan head.

S - Molasses with a hint of chocolate and coffee.

T - Roasted malt with a chocolate/molasses finish.

M - Very rich with a good carbonation level.

O - This is how I remember stouts from my youth. Not particularly "dry" but certainly not "sweet" either. I was surprised at the low alcohol content considering the taste. This would be a good session beer for sure.

A - black with a large, dense, brown head that has good retention

S - roasted malts, faint burnt sugar, faint caramel

T - roasted malts, creamy, faint caramel, underlying burnt sugar, very faint coffee, a mild bitter finish

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

This is a nice, flavorful dry stout. This has more flavor than a Guinness, though it may not be as traditional. This one has plenty of what I consider "Americanized" characteristics such as the faint coffee notes, caramel, and sugary aspects. Traditionally, (right or wrong, I'm not sure) I expect this style to be smoother with a more chocolaty, creamy, smooth, and roasty. Overall, though I liked this beer. It was highly drinkable and enjoyable.

Deep, almost impenetrable black appearance, with ruby highlights. Rich and thick froth with fine off-white bubbles. Lace is minimal, and not too detailed.

Nose is roasty coffee and cocoa, and as my bottle had been warmed to near room temperature, the chocolate tones seem more prominent.

Taste is smooth and almost smoky, with more of the charred chocolate and roasted coffee at the finish. Pretty tasty and well-done, and more than sessionable at only 4.7% percent ABV!

12oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer is perfectly pitch black in color but forms little head. Mild, roasty-malt aroma. Flavor, too, is mild, i.e., sessionable, but pervasive with layers of chocolaty roasted barley. Bitterness is tightly controlled and just serves to make this stout finely balanced. Finish is dry but not quite crisp.

Carbonation isn't out of control, but makes its presence felt. Not too bad, but I think this beer would do a lot better on cask, or at least Nitro.

A - Black pour with no foamy head. Minimal lacing. no carbonation noted. Appearance of the pour is that this is a thin beer.

S - Scents of roasted malt, biscuits, and coffee. Could be a good breakfast beer.

T - taste is certainly dry in the finish. Has a slight smoky feel from roasted malt. Notes of fresh brewed coffee come to the tongue.

M - I found this a bit too dry (yes even knowing the style I think it was a bit too much). Maybe the balance is a little off. I do think it hits the mark for what it is supposed to be. It is an easy drinking stout that is not heavy at all.

O - I have others in this style I think I like better. For those that love Brooklyn Brewery this is a decent beer but not a standout.

Had a glass at Top Hops in LES. Ah, a nicely balanced Irish stout. There's a pleasing bitter tang in the finish with smooth mocha grains up front. It's like a slightly bigger version of Beamish. The body isn't light, but it's on that side of medium, and creamy. I wouldn't mind having a few pints. Tasty stout, find it if you can.

I have to give points for the packaging. A brown bottle with a green label with orange and white highlights reminiscent of the Irish flag.

The beer is almost black in color with a tan head. The head faded away fast and left no lacing.

Smell - Roasted Malts and Coffee

Taste - Roasted malts, coffee, cola with a dry finish.

Mouthfeel is light for a dark beer. Not watery, but not heavy.

Overall - A nice beer, but not outstanding.

This would be a fun beer to serve at a St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

Jet black in color, when held to light some brown hues on the edges. Little to no, off khaki head, dies down immediately. No lacing. Looks rather bleak.

Sweet roast, bakers chocolate, cream, touch of caramel, and some shy fruit esters. No discernible hops.

Mild on the palate, with great nuances. Mild caramel and coffee roast up front lends way to a smooth chocolate and mineral character in the finish. Subtle, yet really smooth and meets the cut of complexity for the style.

Feel is good, carbonation is on point and finishes dry with a touch of creaminess.

On tap into a pint glass. Pours black/dark brown in the glass with a think covering of mocha foam. Solid retention and lacing. The aroma smells of cocoa, roasted coffee and a good bit of ripe citric hops, all giving this a rich tanginess in the nostrils. The taste is the same, with a smooth mix of chocolate, dark coffee flavors, some rather assertive ripe citrus flavors and a then a dry roasted finish. The feel is medium with a smooth and creamy carbonation in the mouth. Maybe it was the freshness here on draft but those hops really had a nice pop to them, with this overall having richness to the flavors that I wasn’t expecting. Maybe not exactly to style but I really enjoyed this.
