Poured out a deep clear brown with about 1/2 finger of tan head. There is minimal retention but a smattering of lacing. The aroma is dark roasted malt with a nice hint of earthy hops. The taste follows closely with the aroma with the hops coming in on the finish. The mouthfeel is to style, with a thinner quality. Overall, this is a well-executed Irish stout.

Pours out a dark brown/ruby (almost black) body with a thin tan head. Smells very malty: toasty and roasty. Hops are a faint whisper of an aroma. Flavor is very light, with subtle malt sweetness and a roasted backbone. Finishes very dry. Mouthfeel is light bodied. Carbonation could be a touch smoother. I always look forward to this release. A great session stout.

Another beer to celebrate St Patrick's day. This would poured someone lighter and easier than most Irish Stouts. I could not detect really anything in the nose. The first sip, all I felt was the large amount of carbonation.. That sort took away the taste itself.

This one is dry as advertised.. A very light impression of a Irish Stout.

Still thinking about all the carbonation.

12oz single poured into a Slyfox stout glass.

A-jet black pour, finger of tan head that quickly reseeds leaving a tan ring. no lacing-a few spots, but I wouldn't call it lacing.

S-like you would expect. cocoa powder/chocolate, dark roasted malts, coffee

T-like the smell indicates. sweet and chocolaty. roasted/smoky caramel notes. a little bitterness in the finish.

M-medium bodied-not as thick as I was expecting, yet still creamy. slight carbonation. I detect little alcohol. dry finish...go figure.

O-well it tastes better than bottled Guinness does most of the time in the US (this coming from a Guinness fan, but lets be honest the quality has plummeted recently). Seems like a pretty standard Irish Dry Stout. Low ABV. Didn't feel like it weighed a ton, so even though I'm satisfied with one, a few could be had in a night.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. Best before May 2014. Date stamp of 3163 1221.

Appearance: Very dark brown with some ruby red highlights when held up to the light. Light tan died very quickly after pouring to leave a tiny ring at the edge. Small occasional strands of lacing noted.

Smell: Cocoa powder, roasted malt, barest hint of black coffee and something very faint that reminds me just a tad of curry powder on a deep inhale.

Taste: Nice roasted malt, burnt sugar, hints of chocolate and mocha. Good bitter finish from the roasted malts and English hops.

Mouthfeel: Lively carbonation (just below fizzy) with a dry finish. Some thickness under all that carbonation.

Overall / Drinkability: Not a "wow" stout, but very drinkable and tasty enough to reach for another without qualm. I think it is overcarbonated for style, but otherwise a good enough beer. Went well with corned beef and colcannon.

The bottle may sport Ireland's official colours (green, white, orange) but what it contains is the more popular image that most people equate with the country: the sooty black and ruddy brown edges of a thick-looking stout (granted, this one lacks the foamy top and theatrical pour).

I've yet to travel to Ireland but I've come to just assume the whole country smells of lightly roasted grains and leafy greenness, the same as what I'm smelling in this glass. I know the country's not known as the "Emerald Island" for its brewers' use of hops, but the East Kent Goldings in this version lend a note of nectarous flowers amidst all the dark, ashy roast.

Brooklyn's Dry Irish Stout has a fairly mild flavour... unless all you've ever known is Guinness, in which case, your head might roll off. Using the proper amount of roasted barley yields a much bolder and more developed taste, one with strong coffee and dark chocolate notes. The finish has just a trace of sourness, something reminiscent of the tang found in a Hershey's Kiss.

Some stouts are thick enough to warrant use of a knife and fork but, typically speaking, Irish-style stouts are not often among them. Few people realize that these beers tend to actually be lighter in alcohol and lower in calories. The mouthfeel, coffee oils and bittersweet chocolate notes notwithstanding, actually has a very dry and neutral texture.

Indeed, I don't see how Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout has any less mainstream appeal than, say, their Lager or Summer Ale; it's every bit as approachable and mild-mannered. The dark appearance may intimidate some cowards out there, but those who muster the courage to get over their irrational fear will surely learned that there's nothing to be afraid of.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing but simple label and branded silver pry-off pressure cap acquired at a local corner mart as part of a 6 pack and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the style - which is one of me favourites - and the brewery. 4.7% ABV according to the label. "Best before May 2014."

Served chilled and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a half finger wide khaki colour head. Okay creaminess and thickness. No lacing actually sticks to the sides of the glass. Head retention is bad - about 1 minute.

Body colour is a predictable opaque solid black. No floating yeast particles are visible. Appears a biteen undercarbonated.

Overall, it's a generally appealing appearance for an Irish stout, but lacks the strong head and unique dark ruby appearance of the best beers in the style.

Sm: Ah yes. Has that lovely roasted barley/dark malt build I love in beers of this style. Also, some chocolate malt, caramel, and touches of a very mild but balancing hop presence. Brief hints of vanilla and coffee too.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

It's a pleasant aroma of average strength, and fits the style very well. I can't wait for the first sip.

T: Very well balanced, if fairly simple. Dark malts, chocolate malts, hints of buried chocolate, vanilla, cream, and coffee. There's also a touch of faint licorice. Unfortunately, the roasted barley notes that are the heart of this style are barely perceptible here, which really holds the beer back.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Not a real complex, intricate, or nuanced build for the style, but I do like it. Cohesive, but far from gestalt.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-flavours come through.

As much as I like it, it seems a bit uninspired. They don't really boldly go for anything unique or special here; it just feels like a "let's imitate an Irish stout" approach to brewing the style. They're not striving for anything new.

Mf: Creamy - but not quite enough. Mild thickness. Medium body. Should be more dry and more coarse. Filling. Has a nice presence on the palate overall, but this texture doesn't feel like an ideal companion to the taste. Overcarbonated. Feels a bit weak as well.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh. Unrefreshing.

Dr: Very drinkable, as all good beers in the style are. But it's not on par with the best Irish-brewed examples of the style, and I say that as someone who lived in Ireland for a year - not some tourist who visited for a couple weeks. It's one of the better American brewed examples of the style I've had in a long time, and I'm glad I picked up a 6 pack. I'll be enjoying this very sessionable brew a lot while I have it, but so long as Guinness Foreign Extra is on the shelf, I'll have no need to buy this again. Another pretty good offering from Brooklyn.
