Bottle from The Lazy Dog
Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a decent sized bubbly tan head that slowly dissipates to a cap on top. Aromas of bitter coffee with a hint of chocolate and a touch of earth and dark fruit. The flavor is bitter roast and light chocolate with a hint of acrid earth. Light to medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a slick sharp mouthfeel. Nice dry stout, a little bit sweeter than the standard Guinness, but a nice easy drinker.

Bottle: Poured a dark color stout with a large brown foamy head with very limited retention. Aroma of light dry roasted malt is not as powerful as I had expected. Taste is reminiscent of dry roasted malt with light Coke notes. Body is thin and carbonation is way too strong for style and resemble more of a cola than a beer. Drainpour.

355 mL bottle from a six-pack picked up at the LCBO; best before Dec. 2014. Always excited to try a new beer from Brooklyn, one of my favourite 'big' American craft breweries. Served only slightly chilled.

This stout pours a fairly typical opaque blackish-brown colour, topped with just over one finger's worth of dense, creamy, tan-coloured head. Looks great, but that foam doesn't maintain cohesion for very long, as it soon dissipates into a thin cap and collar with some very slight lacing. The aroma offers up a mixture of roasted malts, baker's chocolate, coffee, and some earthy English hop notes. Straightforward, and about what I'd expect from the style.

A reasonably tasty stout, though it is not without its flaws. Roasted malt flavours are obviously the focus here, with cocoa and coffee bean notes coming through initially. A grainy malt sweetness comes through mid-sip, with some weak contributions from the roasted malts finishing it off. Dry finish, with a weak aftertaste that quickly vanishes from the palate. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with the carbonation being a little too heavy for my liking. Minor gripes aside, there's nothing objectionable about this beer at all so it is certainly a valid session option.

Final Grade: 3.58, a B grade. While it's not the most interesting stout I've ever tried, Brooklyn's Dry Irish Stout is still a solid example of this highly sessionable style. The flavour profile should be quite agreeable to most palates, although the thin body and weak aftertaste prevents this from being a truly outstanding stout. A good introduction to the style for anyone curious, and something that I would consider picking up again. It's certainly better than Guinness, although it's probably not as pretty.
