Serving Type: 12oz bottle in a pint glass.

Appearance: This pours a dark brown, with little foam.

Smell: Maybe a slightly roasted aroma, but nothing much to speak of.

Taste: Roasty, nutty, bitter. More full flavored than a typical Irish stout. Very good.

Mouthfeel: Very light, medium-high carbonation. Goes down easy as expected.

Overall: I am a big fan of Irish stouts. This is a great American, non-nitro take on the style. Relatively straightforward but still very rewarding.

A: Pours an opaque black with a fizzy khaki mousse that disappears within seconds.

S: Very neutral on the nose-subtle scents of roasted grain, cream, coffee, and leather are barely noticeable even after the beer starts to warm.

T: Fleeting impressions of coffee, cocoa, vanilla bean, leather, caramel, heavy cream, and roasted grain are overpowered by a chalkiness that is very much out of place in a beer of this style. The finish is laden with a harsh minerality which renders the subtle notes of roasted grain and coffee barely perceptible.

M: Fairly full in body and typically dry. Carbonation is intense and prickly for the style. If it were toned down just a bit, this would be spot on in terms of texture.

O: I really hope this is a bad bottle because very little about this beer reminds me of some of the better Irish dry stouts on the market. I tend to be a fan of Brooklyn Brewery, but some of their recent products concern me. This one is a real bummer, doing little to assuage my fears that the quality of the brewery's output has been slipping over the past couple of years.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours an extremely dark brown color. The head is a finger high, and khaki in shade. It's definitely not the creamiest or best retaining in the style (no nitro-can hobnobbery, though), but it crowns the body decently. A thin ring of lacing is left on the glass.

S: To me, this style should be roasty, coffee-like, and maybe faintly hoppy. Luckily, this fulfills those notes decently. I'm also picking up chocolate and graham cracker - at times, it expresses a mocha character well. Mild, but good.

T: Drier than the nose suggested. The primary flavor is roasted coffee beans. There are also touches of powdered chocolate and nuts, but it starts roasty and ends roasty. There isn't much else to this, so I can't give it a higher score.

M: I was a bit skeptical of how dry this would be, but this has a dry finish in spades. What I'm missing, though, is a creamy feel before it dries out completely; even still, it's quite substantial for the style (this is all relative). Very well carbonated. The more I drink, the more I realize it actually isn't super dry.

O: A fine example of the style. It's drinkable yet a bit more substantial than other dry stouts. After I veg on a whole bottle of it, my skepticism was confirmed: it's not THAT dry, and doesn't really have the bold flavor of a regular stout. Still, a decent beer that's worth a try.
