Classic look, if a bit light. Faded burnt orange pour. Just dark enough to keep light at bay. Fairly typical lager head, two fingers at pour, nice retention, lots of contrast between the uniform white bubbles and the orange beer. Moderate lace.

I was hoping for more in the nose. The nose picks up a standard issue pilsner, but instead of a floral citrus notes, it's very earthy. For an annivesary beer, I expected more.

This too was a letdown. Yes, there is flavor. But that's about it. No chocolate or roasty notes, again, par for the pilsner course with some savory hops. Fortunately, there is flavor, so it's not just a glorified macro, but it misses the boat for me.

Nothing to write home about. Very grainy feel with plenty of prickly carbonation. The bitterness is lingering, and very American macro lagerish. Light bodied. No alcohol presence whatsoever.

Overall, this was a huge let down. I'm not a fan of lagers and this is a perfect example. The majority of them taste the same. Despite some color and high ABV, it's hard to distinguish this from something you can find at Applebee's.

appearance: Gorgeous amber/honey. A little hazy, big plush off white head.
smell: not a lot happening here. Some hints of spice and malt, a little fruit. Pleasant but just not very deep imo.
taste: hints at sweetness while actually being quite dry. Some spice and hints of fruit and maybe honey. Lot more going on in the taste (vs the nose). Interesting.
overall: I expected a lot more I've got to say. That said, some cool flavors and very mild drinker, alcohol well hidden.

I'm not entirely sure when this was bottled, but I figured at 9% ABV, it would hold up long enough for me to try it in 2014. Sure enough, it did. And because it didn't have a huge hop character to it, I think it held up fairly true to its original intent.

Poured into a snifter, this dopplebock is a pretty beer. Dark copper color with nice lace. The nose is bocky, with notes of banana bread, brown sugar, vanilla. But it's kind of a musty smell. Not necessarily in a bad way, but in a muted earthy manner. It's almost a dirt smell. But it tastes like a lager, make no mistake. And definitely a Brooklyn lager; you can just tell (not a bad thing... Shiner Bock here in TX is unmistakable as well... must be the lager yeast they use). Richer than most lagers, but not as bold as other dopplebocks I've had. Earthy and smooth, though, with a hint of banana and apple. Mouthfeel is firm.

This is a tasty beer, for sure, but not the most impressive dopplebock I've ever had. Still, I like what they've done here. It's the most unassuming 9% ABV beer I've had in a long time, which is a testament to the folks who brewed this beer. If it were walking into the room, it wouldn't turn too many heads, but it impresses as you get to know it. Cheers to Brooklyn for this subtle yet substantial accomplishment.

Picked up a bomber on special because I have had luck with Brooklyn beer, although Lagers are not typically my favorites. However, bigger beers are normally in my wheelhouse. Excellent appearance with very good smell, citrus combined with Belgian ale. Excellent taste, I enjoyed the beer very much. Alcohol was what you expect from 9%, you notice it but it is not overwhelming. The beer definitely improves as it warms. Excellent beer but one I would probably not buy again at its normal cost, I would if the cost was more reasonable.
