Brooklyn’s Silver Anniversary Lager opens to an initially hop-strong aroma, pink grapefruit, lemon oil, and bits of dandelion stem and pine resin wafting from the bottle. These fade after a few seconds, revealing a dark, fruity base, with fig, date, blackberry, and black cherry fruit esters mixing with molasses, brown sugar, and vanilla, and these atop chunks of thick brown bread, yeasty wheat dough, and floury baguettes, to form a lovely doppelbock base. As a whole the nose is very nice, being well balanced and offering a wide variety of aromas. It does suffer a bit from a lack of strength, but is still remarkably persistent for its potency, the dark fruit esters and sugars being especially nice.

On the tongue, the beer is hoppier than expected, with pink grapefruit, grapefruit rind, lemon oil, and touches of mint and eucalyptus coming across in medium strength. The sugars and dark fruit esters come in after a second or so, adding fig, date, and cherry fruit esters, as well as brown sugar and faint bits of vanilla and molasses. The bready notes are lighter here as well, with floury baguette and yeasty rising dough still present, but in lesser quantities. There are also underlying touches of toasted pecan and toast crust, the faint burnt notes playing nicely off of the breads. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, with larger bready notes emerging as the sugars die off. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high, fizzing on the tongue.

Overall, this certainly isn’t bad beer, and the 9% ABV is hidden very well, but it does lack a certain something that would qualify a beer for such an important anniversary. It seems rather watery and fizzy as a whole, coming across as times more like a cola than a beer in mouthfeel, and the flavors are more muted than in many doppelbocks. The hops also take a bit too large of a chunk of the profile, further masking the bready, fruity notes. More balance and more oomph would have served this beer well.

This was a special treat for me. I bought this bottle around the end of 2013 and its been sitting in the fridge until now.04062014.

A- Hazy, unfiltered,orange-copper color. Big foam and then dissipates to a quarter inch film.

T- Sweet malt all the way until the end for a long lasting dry after taste. A small hint of hops.

M- medium body and low carbonation. Very smooth and drinkable.

O- fantastic brew. Very enjoyable to drink. First serving I drank just for enjoyment and second one I had with food and I still felt the warmth of the alcohol.

This beer entices curious brew fans with the hypnotic label and keeps their attention after the top pops off satisfyingly. When poured into a big pint glass the beer comes to life with a surge of dense white foam that dissipates slowly with concentric layers of lace along the sides demonstrating the mature qualities contained within the bottle. After finishing this beer I am anxiously awaiting the next anniversary batch from Brooklyn Brewery.

Pours clear as a copper penny (SRM 11-14) with a two-inch off-white foam. The head has longevity and leaves dense patches of lace on a hand-blown pilsner glass.

The aroma is sweet and fruity with a mix of caramel and a few spicy notes.

Quite sweet, with toasted malt and spices. Light to modest bitterness on entry that builds into a long finish. The character is relatively simple.

Watery texture and fizzy carbonation in this light-to-medium bodied beer with alcohol about as expected.

This Doppelbock was enjoyable on its own, but improved when paired with charcuterie.

Poured from a corked & caged 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Label is numbered 0433. Intriguing artwork on the front.

A: Hazy, orange-red body. 1+ finger of off-white head with good retention. Light lacing.

S: Spicy, slightly musty Belgian-type yeast. Light fruity notes with touches of peach, pear. Bread, biscuit. Honey. Candi sugar.

T: Fruity malt and toasted notes initially. A moderate hop bitterness develops for balance. Finds its way nicely to a surprisingly dry finish. Some lingering nuttiness & light bread in the aftertaste. Alcohol presence is soft for 9% ABV.

M: Moderate carbonation with a moderate body. Smooth and rich - accentuates the malt qualities in this brew.

O: I read "lager" on the front and "doppelbock strength" on the back. There's definitely some Belgian yeast-fueled fruit as well. It's a well balanced, tasty hybrid that makes for a Silver Anniversary beer worth celebrating.

Prost!

A: HUGE head on this beer. 3+ fingers, off-white and leaves behind lots of lacing. The beer itself is copper and surprisingly clear.

S: Bready malts, quite a lot of orange peel, raisins, and a hefty amount of alcohol to round it all out. The aroma is quite powerful, you can smell it as soon as the bottle is opened.

T: After the aggressive aroma, the beer itself if a bit of a letdown. The flavor brings biscuity malts, alcoholic esters, and actually a lot more hops that I was expecting. It drinks surprisingly easy, and seems to get better with each sip.

M: medium body, slightly chewy, with a lot of carbonation.

O: I wish i would have bought another one of these to lay it down for a while. The beer is good, but I feel like it needs to finish rounding out and developing flavors. that being said, the flavor is good, and it goes down easy.
