Session IPA

Brooklyn Scorcher #366 is a very tasty summer pale ale featuring a hop so new that it doesn’t have a real name yet – right now it’s just called “HBC 366”. But this hop does have parents. Jason Perrault of Perrault Farms crossed the Warrior variety with a “wild” hop back in 2001. Jason says: “The brilliant coloration of the leaves combined with a nice growth habit and exceptionally formed cones with abundant lupulin (the repository of all those aromatic oils), resulted in a strikingly beautiful plant.”

Working with the legendary hop breeder Gene Probasco, Jason took cuttings and started growing dozens of plants with fellow grower John I. Haas. Tom Nielsen, hop guru with our friends at Sierra Nevada Brewing, helped them figure out that this new hop was indeed delicious in beer. By 2009, the Smith family of B.T. Loftus Ranches were growing some too, and today “HBC 366” occupies about 1.2 acres of land in the Yakima Valley of Washington.

And here it is! Brooklyn Scorcher #366 is a hoppy pale ale that’s dry, minerally and fruity on the palate, snappy in the center, and bursting with the citrusy, piney notes that make our new pal 366 so special.

On tap at 2 Bros. Pours a dirty dishwater brownish orange color with a half inch of head. Some lacing. The aroma is fruity, with some tropical fruits and citrus hops. Some floral notes as well. Taste is nice bitter tropical fruits with some grapefruit rind. Floral hops near the finish with some sweet malts. Light mouthfeel. Nicely drinkable with a good amount of hops. Overall, solid lighter IPA that works well for the summer.

Based on notes from 2013. Had on draft.
A: pours straw yellow, hazy body with white head with nice retention and lacing
S: smells like peppers; interesting
T: a lot of difference flavors going on here; interesting, citrusy and earthy taste with kind of a piney aftertaste; some meatiness, but ok; lemongrass aftertaste
M: light bodied and pretty crisp; nice
D: nice mouthfeel and taste combo; nice drinking beer

From a 330ml bottle.
L: Clear, golden colour with plentiful carbonation. A 1cm, sudsy head reduces slowly to a cap leaving spotty lacing.
S: Pale malt and light citrus. Quite subdued.
T: The hops are pretty harsh for what is supposed to be an easy-drinker. Pine and metallic flavours. Has a short, bitter finish.
F: Pretty thin mouthfeel. Not great.
O: Disappointed with this hoppy yet low ABV beer. Thin and harsh. The malt base is missing and the hops are arid.

Whitish straw color. Moderate head. Modest spots.

Light caramel with a touch of floral hop. Soft and attractive.

The taste is far more harsh. The malt flavor is dry and short lived. The hop is sharp but not strong. The aftertaste is relatively short, considering. The body and bubbles are in the middle of the range.

Slight dark straw, white head. Herbaceous grass, dandelions, crazy green. Daisy Cutter type of beer with more malt.
