Brooklyn Greenmarket Wheat Beer is brewed from 70% New York State-grown wheat and barley. Drinking this lovely beer helps reinvigorate the state’s grain industry and benefit GrowNYC's mission to support family farms, farmers markets, gardens, recycling and education. Greenmarket Wheat is as bright and refreshing as a summer day. The Raw wheat gives this beer its zing, barley malt brings depth, and Belgian yeast lends complexity. Accented with orange peel, local honey and a dash of coriander, the beer is naturally carbonated by re-fermentation in handsome 750ml bottles.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. as best i can tell from the smudged coding, best by february, year illegible, but guessing this year rather than next, so at least 6 months past its best by. oh well, here goes.

a careful pour reveals a nice golden yellow body. slightly fizzy white head dissipates to to just a ring. no lacing.

slightly earthy grassy aroma.

watery taste, with a very faint bite. slightly malty taste.

pretty close to thin on the mouth. dry and malty on the finish.

overall, clearly a faded beer, but not a complete waste of a drink on a hot summers day.

I am unfamiliar with the style but when I was expecting a Blue Moon knock off I was totally wrong. Poured golden yellow with a generous head that dissipated quickly with no lacing. The Belgium yeast stands out and it is spiced beautifully. Great carbonation too. A true flavor bomb. I am very impressed. It's on sale at $4.99 a six pack and I will be getting more tomorrow.

Brooklyn Brewery "Greenmarket Wheat"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BB MAR 08 2017" and sampled on MAR 20 2017
$1.83 @ (Wegmans) Cherry Hill Wine, Liquor & Beer, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice appearance. The foamy white head holds well. Cloudy golden-orange body. Looks like a hefeweizen almost. Clove in the aroma is like a hefe as well, and there's clear wheat. It's supposed to be a witbier though. Ahh, I get some coriander in the nose as well. Ahh, I see on the label that it's a Bavarian yeast, so it's really a blend of a witbier and hefe, or more particularly, a hefe that's got "...honey, orange peel and coriander" added to it. It's interesting. I don't get the honey but that's probably fermented out. Oh, and I see that this was originally done with a Belgian yeast in 750ml bottles - I guess they've changed it. I'm a little disappointed I didn't get a chance to try the original version. Oh well. It's nicely balanced, sweetish and wheaty upfront, and then drier and just lightly spicy in the finish, zesty, I guess. Looking back, the lacing is quite limited, but it's not that carbonated, in fact it seems slightly less than standard. Ahh, I get the orange peel in the aroma as well. Nice. I like it overall, but I wonder if I like it better than either a witbier or a hefe. Sometimes I do want a little bit lighter hefe, of something with a little zest to it, and I guess it fills that niche. But then again, wouldn't a heftier witbier do that? Ah, I don't know. It's OK. It's interesting and well made, and really quite drinkable and refreshing.

12oz bottle in a beer glass.

Pale yellow color, bubbly and clear(?) with a thin white head and little lacing.

Smells of raw wheat, yeast, steamy grass, spicy. It's unpleasant.

Some wheat, yeast, light fruit, orange, spice.

Harsh feel.

"Lovely" and "raw" are in the commercial description. It comes across as "harsh" to me. I'm being kind.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Some sediment left on the bottom of the bottle after a full pour.

Hits the nostrils with yeast, clove and banana plus fainter baked bread.

Flavor: largely follows the nose. Good balance for style with none of the elements overly dominant. Grains come to the fore in the aftertaste.

Overall: excellent for style, even by German standards.
