Notes/Commercial Description:
We brew each batch with over 3,000 pounds of fresh raspberries and both sour and sweet cherries. The addition of fruit prior to fermentation makes this crisp ale tart instead of sweet. It’s pink in color of course, light-bodied, and refreshing with delicate, delectable berry aromas. We’ll bet the farm that there’s no better autumn seasonal around.

To me, this beer crosses the fruit beer and sour styles. As such, I don't think it does either poorly, but isn't going to be a top beer in either, also. For what I wanted from this beer (given descriptions and reviews): a refreshingly tart summer-style beer, I actually enjoyed it.

The beer pours a rosey amber with good carbonation and small-bubbled head that tries to cover the surface. The smell has enough of a light raspberry tone to let me know what I am getting. I can maybe get a hint of bitterness or maybe some funkiness that in retrospect is the tartness I get in the taste.

That taste starts out light and crisp, but very quickly turns fruit-tart, the sour cherry notes overpowering the perceptible raspberry notes. What is missing is some depth or true puckering nature from the sour side, the effect is that it feels a bit like a watered down sour more so than a fruit beer. I am fine with this, as I enjoy sours more than fruit beer, but the mix might not sit with others.

12 oz bottled 8/26/13. Served in a Goose Island stemmed glass

Appearance: Pours a dark rose color with 1 finger of a white head that dissipates to a thin collar. Body is clear with light amounts of visible carbonation.

Smell: Raspberries, cherry, cereal grain. Berry character is that of fresh berries and not artificial in nature. Overall aroma is pretty straight forward, but appealing.

Taste: Raspberry and a hint of some other general red berry character, mild grainy malt. Slightly tart and balanced by a slight sweentess.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied and crisp with medium carbonation. Really refreshing and almost no alcohol presence.

Overall: A pretty good fruit beer. It's not going to knock your socks off, but I think Yards accomplished what they were going for on this. It's simple, flavorful and refreshing. It's a perfect summer beer.

Appearance: pours a reddish orange color with a short 1/2" head that falls apart quickly.

Smell: raspberries are all you can pick up from the nose.

Taste: raspberries, some slight tart funk, grainy malt, some lemon zest, and a mild bitterness are the main flavors.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, less crisp and a bit dry at the finish. Long lasting light tartness and berry flavor stick to the tongue.

Overall: a slow sipping fruit forward beer that is mildly refreshing.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- A clear dark pinkish color with a red tint and a two finger white head with a light pink tint.

S- Raspberries, some tart cherries, an almost jam like sweetness.

T- Tart raspberries and cherries, bready malts, not much more going on, the tartness is not a very big flavor.

M- Light body, crisp.

O- Not a bad fruit beer, but not great beer. Tartness is very mild and the malts are a little out of place.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.

Pours a sickly pink color that fills up the remainder of the 20 oz glass with foam. Aroma is fizzy-sprite like, with some artifical berry or jolly rancher smells wafting from the glass.

First sip is a rush of sour cherry flavor that quickly fades into a bready malt flavor. This is billed as a "tart berry ale" and it does live up to that description. Strange to taste the tart berry flavor in a non bug-soured beer.

All in all it isn't bad... just not something I'd crave or go out of my way to try again. An interesting diversion, useful for breaking up a pair of strong IPAs.
