Saison / Farmhouse Ale |  6.50% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
Saisons were originally brewed to keep farmhands happy and hydrated during the warm summer months. True to the style, Yards’ Saison is a semi-unfiltered Belgian style ale brewed with distinctive Belgian yeast. It’s delicate and fruity with a subtle spiciness. Styrian Goldings in the kettle lend a touch of hop to the palate, balancing out this highly drinkable version of the classic style.

Picked up in Indianapolis. Poured a 12 oz bottle. Reading other reviews there seems to be two interpretations of this beer. Either a citrus pucker up blast, or a semi mild Belgian wheat beer. I seemed have sampled the second of the two.

Poured a bright, off lemon color beer with a mostly cloudy appearance. The smell is slightly wheaty with limited citrus flavor with more tart than lemon tones. Some herb tones and mild spices. The taste is light with some hefe qualities. A fruity semi-lemon feel is noticeable at top but not overwhelming as would expect. A big wheat flavor with some coriander and white pepper are present. The taste become more noticeable as the beer warms. But one thing is that this is really mild compared to typical Siasons.

The beer itself is taste and would be a good light introduction to Siason for the inexperienced palate . A light body and smoothness makes it easy to drink. But just not what I was expecting for a Siason.

Reviewed on 6/28/13 12 OZ Bottle in a tulip.

A - Pours a hazy gold with a two finger creamy white head.

S - Citrus, lemon and spice burst out of this beer to start. Having difficulty nailing down the spice aroma, not pepper just a general spice aroma that I cant pin down. Notes of malt more in the background.

T - Tart, light malt and spice throughout. Light bitterness on the finish and the spice lingers on the palate.

M - Light to medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Dry.

O - Above average Saison, but a little boring perhaps. Wouldn't go out of my way to have again.

A: The beer is clear golden yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation along with some fine particulates floating in suspension. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar consisting of large bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of lemongrass and pepper are present in the nose. Notes of also bananas and earthy yeast become evident as the beer warms up.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell but seems to be a little fruitier with notes of bananas and also has hints of Belgian yeast and sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp and dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and could make for a nice choice if you are looking for a fruitier saison.
