Notes/Commercial Description:
Saisons were originally brewed to keep farmhands happy and hydrated during the warm summer months. True to the style, Yards’ Saison is a semi-unfiltered Belgian style ale brewed with distinctive Belgian yeast. It’s delicate and fruity with a subtle spiciness. Styrian Goldings in the kettle lend a touch of hop to the palate, balancing out this highly drinkable version of the classic style.

12oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

Bright golden hue, sufficient lacing. Big spicy aroma with tones of bread, yeast, phenols, a kiss of alcohol. Smooth with ample crispness, moderate sized body. Wild herb phenols with some mildly harsh bubble gum, slightly bitter with some nutty yeast in the finish.

Everything comes together in the end even if some flavors seem to showboat.

I enjoyed this on tap, served chilled in a pint-review from notes.

The color is golden with hazed appearance and thick white head with film of lace left clinging with tight bead. The smell is spicy and has a slight yeast ester with peppery and mild hop scent with gentle herbal tinge and mild malt in the aroma. The feel has a mild bitter texture with medium high carbonation and light yeastiness with fruity tang in the mostly dry finish.

The taste is good with some slightly spice flavor from the yeast and moderate amount of hop in the taste with some fruity yeast qualities and light lemony aspect with hint of pine in the hop profile. There is a nice base of pilsner malt to give some balance. I found this to be above average -a decent hoppy drinkable saison.

Little heavy for a saison, has a funny taste, not your typical saison. Still goes down well and I could probably drink a sixer.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a hazed orange-yellow color with a two finger thick and billowy white head. The head fades slowly leaving a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of wheaty and yeasty aroma with a lots of banana and spice of coriander and clove. Along with these smells are some other light fruit aromas of an orange and a lemongrass aroma as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a slightly lightly sweetened yeasty and wheaty taste with the sweetness being a mix of candied sugar and some fruit of an orange flavor. As the taste advances the candied sugar and orange fade, but some flavors of banana come to the tongue and bring with them some clove and pepper. A little bit of a grassy and lemon flavor come to the tongue toward the end of the taste and with the dwindling of the sweeter flavors overall, leaves a rather well balanced, only lightly funked and rather more crisp saison flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium in its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation that was average to slightly low. A little higher carbonation would have been slightly more fitting for the style, but even so the feel was alright and keep it a rather easy drinking brew.

Overall – A somewhat drier and less funky saison that had a very easy drinking feel. Not a bad brew and one to at least give a try too.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is musty, spices, a bit funky. Taste is big on spices, pepper, some yeast and banana as well. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

DATE REVIEWED: July 24, 2014... GLASSWARE: La Fin du Monde tulip... OCCASION: just watched Earth to Echo--fun, but not E.T. ...APPEARANCE: hazy, glowing golden orange body; an armada of bubbles cascades upward into a white, frothy, three-finger head that leaves thick cumulous clouds... AROMA: candied sugar, hay and lemon zest--missing the signature barnyard yeasts, though--definite allspice, cumin and coriander... PALATE: lively, active in the teeth; medium-bodied, with a long drawn-out, welcome aftertaste; sessionable but somewhat substantial... TASTE: apple, raisin, grape, zesty lemon, anise and cumin combine to create an abbey-like profile without the alcohol... OVERALL: one of the first (THE first?!) saison I had, and this bottle rewards well within my price range ($8.99 for a six); quite flavorful for the thirst-quenching expectations; Yards dos not often disappoint, and they do not here...
