Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Cape of Good Hope, which changes year to year, pays homage to the original style and adventurous spirit of the first British IPAs. This past year’s release, a west coast style double IPA, is brewed with 100% pilsner malt, imparting a subtle maltiness and beautiful golden color. Loaded with hops, there’s Columbus in the kettle and Centennial in the whirlpool. Then it’s dry hopped with El Dorado, Calypso, and Galaxy, resulting in a dry, crisp ale with unmistakable flavors and aromas of tropical fruits.

On draft at the Drafting Room. 2 ounce sample.

A medium golden orange with some thin white head that grips the glass. Nose is very perfumed and like frankensensce. Some dried citrus and cinnamon. Palate is pleasantly bitter with lush citrus and green leaves. Some caramel and vanilla. A suggestion of oak too. Very interesting and cool. Would love to try again.

This is a pale brew, golden yellow and with a bright white head. The aroma is hoppy...earthy and herbal. There is a little malt, pale, not any roasted character. Some fruit...peach.m. The taste is balanced. Some serious spicy hops...a a little malt, but it is hop dominant. Full in body. It is a very enjoyable brew.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of hops, a bit of tropical fruits. Taste is very bitter up front, some tropical fruit, alcohol is well hidden, very little malt balance. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

When I poured this into a glass it, has a nice burnt orange color body with a small head and some sticky lace to it. The aroma has a nice hop aroma to it. The taste is piney and a little citrus to it. There is a little malt on the back of the tongue. The mouthfeel is very smooth and it doesn't drink like a 8%. Overall it is a pretty darn good beer.

Picked this up in Totowa a few weeks back, having never had this before. IPA's seem to be a dime a dozen but with that in mind, this was still really enjoyable and easy to drink, given how high the alcohol content was. AS so many others on here alluded to, the hop burn wasn't present here and like the other popular offerings from Yards, this had a bit of an old-school taste and feel to it. That's not a bad thing, given that an IPA needs to stand out in order to be fully enjoyed from all of the aggressive and West Coast examples that tend to flood store shelves!

This poured and looked like a Pils, as the clear hue, light shade, and somewhat fluffy head all lead me to believe that this wasn't typical. The foam quickly settled as the lacing picked up where it left off, being present on the side of my pint glass where I drank out of. Not a terribly strong aroma to this but what was present was solid - tropical hops, a hint of caramel, a hint of weed-like skunk, some basic chocolate, and a hint of grain. The lack of burning bitterness makes this intriguing and well-balanced, as the hop-bomb factor was not in play here and the earthy aftertaste helped each sip lead into the next one. Maybe a bit of grain was what tied everything in together!

Not often that a beer of this style can have the alcohol nearly hidden, but that was the case here. There was a surprising amount of papaya and mango here, which really tied the other flavors in nicely. As far as IPA's go, this would be a great example for someone who's never had one before, as the beer went down easily and was about as balanced as any malted barley beverage could get. Nice to have something that stood out from the pack without being too terribly strong - a must-try for any hophead looking for a fix and a break at the same time.

A: pale, hazy orange leaning toward yellow, translucent; rich, creamy dense head lasts forever; bands of thick peristent lacing
S: orange peel, farmyard must, pine
T: bitter hops, lemon, citrus, malty undertones
M: light-medium-bodied
O: Relatively balanced as an IPA, but lacking the strong, fresh feel of most. There's nothing particularly impressive or wrong.
