Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with a two finger, pillowy white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap/ring. Excellent retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Looks very good.
Slightly spicy sweet malt aroma that's surprisingly lacking in hop character. Slightly floral with subtle earthy pine and hints of fresh cut grass but the rye and sweet malt notes nearly completely overpowers all of the hop character. There's supposedly bravo, nugget, chinook, centennial, Citra, simcoe and Columbus but I'm struggling to pick up much of a hop presence. Lots of rye and caramel along with toffee, roasted nut, toast and caraway seed. Not offensive but the nose is very disappointing.
On the lighter end of medium body with a subtle spicy rye presence along with a delicate earthy hop presence that is almost completely overpowered by the prominent sweet malt bill. Dry with some lingering bitterness complimented by peppery rye before the strong malt backbone takes over. Strong rye and caramel sweetness along with some roasted almond, toffee, hazelnut and a touch of dark fruit. Overall, this beer is somewhat decently balanced and easy to drink but the hop presence is severely muted. Not a bad beer but kind of disappointing offering from a solid brewery. I wouldn't order this beer again.

Yards enters into 2014 with a nice new addition, rye ipa. I'm not certain, but I bet they did a hop burst technique using the citra, centennial, simcoe, ctz mix. Very nice amber color and good head retention, a good drinking rye ale with plenty of citrus aroma... And that's where my one comment is based.
I would bet that out of the hops listed, they used more citra then the others. Citra is very dominant in the ale and that is where this beer falls down a notch for my palate.
Over the past year, i have tasted lots of beers highlighting citra hops. It seems lots of brewers bought a ton of citra an throwing into all kinds of styles, but rye ? I'm not sure....
I would recommend this beer, no doubt, but it gets me thinking of brewing my own rye but this time with more centennial...

Crystal clear copper hue super sticky bright white head. Some herbal and floral hop notes with a touch of spicy rye.
Flavor is amazing clean in classic yards fashion. Rye is nice and subtle . Toasty grainy body, medium and slightly creamy body yet crisp and dry on the finish. Floral hops, spicey rye and toasty grain all balanced extremely well with faint lingering bitterness

A - A standard pour yields a fingers worth of crisp slightly fizzy bone white colored froth with a bit of an uneven and rock top... Decent retention... The head turns a slight bit creamier as it settles leaving a full rich layer of thick lacing... The color is an inviting medium caramelly copper... A moderate bit of moderate-to-quick paced carbonation rises within... Some lacing clings to the sides of the glass...
S - The rye is subtle, but the spiciness is present... There are some light floral notes as well... There are light caramel sweet notes... Nothing dominates... There are sots of layers and nice complexity...
T - No single flavor dominates and all the characters ebb and flow nicely throughout... There is a light caramel and toffee sweetness... There are some light floral hops... A very minor rye spice kick... The hop bitterness rises in intensity on the finish...
M - Medium bodied... Sturdy... Light yet brisk carbonation... And a very nice light airy quality about it... Quite smooth...
D - A very average beer - I mean that as a compliment... Solid, satisfying and no complaints... Not my favorite Yards offering by any means, but it's pleasant enough and I'll have no trouble polishing off a six pack, but 'm not sure it's a seasonal that I'll need to revisit given it's January / February counterparts...
