ok. that is what i found the Garten to be now. it did have pretty good food and beer years ago. now it is ok. parking is not the best but when you get into short nort that is what you usually deal with. the beers left me a lil dissapointed.
used to sit outside but sometimes the sun and heat cook me a bit much.
worth a visit to this long standing establishment, but i would not have super high hopes.
the area - short nort, brewery district and german village are good areas to visit.
suckem up and movem out!

Not really anything special here at this place. A good sized wooden bar, but seems a little old and dirty. Several table around the walls and a large outside patio area.
The beer selection is below average. Maybe ten taps if that. Nothing outstanding usually some sort of Columbus brewing, some sort of Sam Adams and handful of macros.
Food wise everytime I've been there is for the pizza, which is pretty solid.
Only have been here a couple times, not a spot I'd hit up or go outta my way to hit up. Parking can also be terrible down here.
This place just lacks any some sort of atmosphere. Nothing terrible or exciting just rather boring.

I live right down the street from this bar. I have stopped in many times but I dont make it one of my most frequented spots.
The bar area seems a little dirty, old and it always has a strange smell. There is plenty of seating at booths, tables, at the bar and in the side room or "garten".
Beer selection is average. There is usually a typical Goose Island tap like Honker's Ale or something. Other beers that are commonly here are Warsteiner, Guinness, a Sam Adams (Noble Pils most recently) and a few macros.
The food is not horrible but many dishes are just a few steps up from refreshment stand grub.
There really is no reason for me to stop here. Of the bars in my neightborhood this one has less of an atmosphere and selection, plus I know everyone at the other bars.

Okay, I don't know if I have ever gotten anything other than pizza here. It is what it is know for and what me and my friends get. I don't get down here as often since my friends moved out of German Village. An old standby, the crowd is typical for the area and usually I will hit it fairly late to miss the "happy hour" micro jerks(who must have just come from Victory's). The beer selection is passable for those bars trying to at least offer something different and the easy ones always being Great Lakes and Sierra Nevada. So far the Short North/Arena district is doing a better job than it's southern counterpart and I hope the area gets better since I do like German Village/Brewery District.

This old German Village and Columbus favorite is a shadow of its onetime self. Years ago it had some fairly nice local beers and was quite a spot for some real German foods such as sauerbraten and such. We'd go there on Wednesdays just to get that. Handmade cabbage rolls and other European goodies greeted you. Now the standard bar grub greets you (what the heck is it with pizza in a bier garten?) with prices like it was still the good ole days.
Not a bad place to kick back and enjoy yourself if you're lucky enough to find parking. Casual and informal, the waitstaff are helpful and you can pop the top on a few nice brews. Sadly, Sam Adams is lumped with foreigns for price purposes. (Sigh) Still, it's a fun place to visit with some buds.

Stopped here after a softball game, and so did a lot of other people. I would definitely recommend trying to come when the parking is easier to find. They have two small lots and street parking, but even that is not sufficient on a weekend night. I had been here once or twice in the last couple years and remembered it being pretty good. This place is known for its pizza and I must say the pizza is excellent. They have an outdoor patio area, a covered patio-type area (with picnic bench type seating) and a bar area with more traditional booth and table seating. Nice German-themed atmosphere in the bar area, with lots of old pictures and what-not.
As for the beer, it is kind of a let-down considering the whole "bier garten" name. You can find a few different Great Lakes, and Sierra Nevada Pale and Blue Moon in bottles, and Guinness or Warsteiner on draught. Otherwise it's just the usual stuff. To make matters worse, it turns out one of the guys on my softball team works for Budweiser, so he brought a big tub of them and handed them out to everyone on the patio. I was the only person there drinking a Dortmunder Gold. What a nightmare!
The service here can be sketchy depending on the time. Bar service is okay, but if you are out on the patio you pretty much have to grab a passing server.
I would recommend this place only during off-hours or if you like rowdy softball crowds.
