Notes/Commercial Description:
Our version of this classic export ale. We started with copious amounts of 2-row malt as well as imported roast, chocolate and black malts. Our hop bill of Chinook, Williamette and EK Goldings was also increased this year. With these changes, we anticipate an extended period of maturation and a longer window of peak flavor in the cellar. Look for this when we have the shortest daylight of the year!

I bought this back in February after snowboarding at Cranmore and have finally decided to take it out of the fridge and into a glass. The bomber was poured into an imperial pint glass. #632 from batch 1162.

Appearance: The beer poured a nice 3 finger chocolate colored head. A little reduction, but stays nicely. Also, beer is pitch black with no clarity and no signs of carbonation. The head of beer has not come down yet and will have to say the retention is fantastic and lacing on the glass.

Smell: Right off the bat you get a nice roasted coffee and mocha aroma followed by a slight hint of sweet malts in the rear.

Taste: I think I am slightly disappointed about the taste of the beer. I was expecting a more flavored beer than the slight hints of coffee, mocha, and malt and bitterness towards the end. alcohol is a little noticeable towards the end of the sip too.

Mouthfeel: The beer seems light, a little watery, easy to drink, with a medium amount of carbonation.

Overall: This was a decent Imperial Stout from Northern New Hampshire. I think the bottle was $10 or $15 at the brewpub, so can't complain. A must stop for anybody driving through on Routes 16/302 in North Conway. Hopefully I'll make it up there again this upcoming winter for some boarding. Will try this again, but there are others out there too.

In a tulip glass the beer was a black color with two fingers of cafe au lait head. Sticky lace.
Aroma of chocolate and coffee. A little muted.
More in the taste. Sweet chocolate, dusty cocoa, coffee.
A dry, medium-bodied stout.
Very nice at $15 for the bomber.

22oz brown bomber with a bottle and batch # on the label.

LOOK: Pitch black, thick dark tan head

SMELL: Espresso, dark chocolate, faint charcoal, brownies, burnt currants, suggestion of licorice root, estery

TASTE: Smooth, charred grain, cocoa powder, rasins, Italian Roast coffee, burnt sugar, creamy, woody hops, yeast, warming semi-sweet finish

Very well balanced, good to see and Impy Stout that is not all in your face with massive amounts of sweetness and alcohol. Well rounded and hits all the right buttons for me.

Had on tap at the pub on New Years Day..served into a pint glass

Appearance: black in color with minimal head, opaque, low carbonation

Smell: coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, and roasted malt

Taste: dark chocolate, hops, coffee, and some medicinal aftertaste

Mouthfeel: heavy bodied, low carbonation, sweet with slight bitterness

Overall: This is a very solid RIS. A nice slow drinker with just the right amount of sweetness. I think this is one of Moat's better beers. I will get this again.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Black with a thin beige head.

Smell: Malts, alcohol, coffee and chocolate.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Thick and smooth, full bodied. Taste of coffee and chocolate with mild kick of alcohol.

Overall: Pretty good stout, I would buy this one again.

Branching out from their normal draft and growlers only, Moat decided to hand bottle 70 cases of this Imperial Stout (this is their first time bottling)

Pours a solid motor oil black with a big thick light-mocha colored head.

Aroma is heavy on the roasted barley with a strong coffee presence and some lingering sweetness that hints at cherries. Also some chocolate notes but not a lot by imperial stout standards.

Taste lines up well with the aroma notes, being heavy on the coffee and some fruity sweetness as well. Again there are hints of chocolate but I'm getting too much of a roasted flavor to really pick up on it.

Mouthfeel has plenty of body to it with some chewiness. Overall, Moat seems to have gone all out this time with their Imperial Stout and they have a winner with this one (of course, they must have realized this too because the decision to bottle it was a good move). Seems like this one could hold up with some of the best impy stouts out their.

From the 22 fl. oz. bottle marked #360 of Brew 1162. It pours a dark brown with red ruby hues when held to the light. It yields a silky, long lasting tan head. The aromas are fully of smoked malty notes with a mellow alcohol chaser. Not much in the way of chocolates. The heavy, creamy body warms the tongue and throat. There is a nice maltiness in the taste with a dry hopped ending. You might want to buy it on tap at the pub if you get the chance. At $20 per bottle you might find that a bit steep for a nice, but otherwise typical Imperial Stout.

Poured bottle #336 of brew#1163 into my Moat Mountain pint glass.

Pours black with a four finger head on it. Very carbinated. Try a slow pour on a tilted glass for glass number two and still got a good sized head. The head stayed with the glass almost the entire time.

smelled inviting with a touch of what I believe to be molasses.

I got some sweetness in the beginning with hops in the middle finishing burnt and smokey.

I was a little upset with how thin this was.

At Twenty bucks a bottle it does not live upt o the price. However I did enjoy the beer and would drink it again.

Appearance: Black - dark, pours pretty heavy - small, tan head - fades to a minimal head, leaves some spots and streaks of lacing

Smell: Dark malts and burnt - char, chocolate malts, leather, and licorice - roasty with some burnt coffee - dark, dark chocolate - minimal sweetness, mostly just burnt

Taste: Burnt - roasty, burnt coffee - burnt chocolate malts - leather, like licking a wallet - burnt bitterness - minimal sweetness, but some depth in the malts - some booze - lightly smoky - lots of dark, dark chocolate with some sweeter, milk chocolate malts

Mouthfeel: Medium, oily, adequately carbonated

Overall: Good stuff

I didn't really know what to expect from this beer, so I guess I'm happy with the result. Unapologetically burnt and roasty. Not bad, but could use some more complexity.

Pours the darkest of browns, almost black, with red highlights when held up to the light. Forms a two-finger, thick, rocky, coffee colored head that fades slowly to a thin cap. Excellent lacing.

Smells of sweet caramel malts, dark red fruits, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Lots of roasted malt character, but there is great balance between the sweet and roasted aromas. There's a hint of some floral hops in there, and the alcohol is masked pretty well.

Taste is very much like the nose. Great balance between the sweet and roasted malts. Reminds me of coffee ice cream with a chocolate swirl. Nice dry finish as the hops come through in the end.

Medium to full-bodied mouthfeel; it's creamy and a little thick, but not as thick or chewey as some others of this style.

Despite the ABV, it is quite drinkable. It doesn't go down quickly by any means, and one is usually my limit, but it is tasty and smooth!

**This is a very limited release available only at the brewery by the pint; no growler fills, unfortunately. If you find yourself in North Conway, stop in and grab a pint while it lasts.

2011. Batch 1162. Bottle 1050.

Deep brown body. Huge, rocky tan head.

Nose is dark fruits and bitter chocolate with a sharp, smoky quality.

Flavor is rich and deep. Bitter chocolate shows up again. Slight sharp astringency on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium, with high carbonation.

Overall, a tasty brew. Light and drinkable for a 9% RIS.

Creamy darker head, pitch black beer

Nose add lots of coffee, roast, toffee, oats, dark fruit, light burnt roast and coffee

Taste is dry, light woody like taste, chalky, dark chocolate, coffee, roast, chewy oats, some burnt roasty and dark roasty bitter earthy taste, no real booze, very dry finish, some earthy bittering hops come though even more on the finish. THe burnt flavors take away from it a little, but I bet cellaring it for a year or two will help it.

Mouth is med to a bit heavier bodied, decent carb

Drink is decent, no real booze, dry finish, little sticky

Will pour a five+ finger thick brown head that fades very slowly leaving a good lace. Black color with hints of mahogany. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Baked chocolate nose, flavor is baked-burnt chocolate, smooth. Higher ABV is hidden. Decent imp stout but way overpriced at $19.99 for a 22oz bottle #365 from Bert's Better Beers Hooksett, NH.

2011 Vintage, bottle # 375, brew #1162, 22 oz bomber into a tulip glass. Opens with a huge fizz and an instant gush over. Yay, an infection. Normally I don't review infected beers but since a store had the audacity to mark this beer up and put a fancy "2011 Vintage" post-it note on the bottle....what the hell.

Pours a pitch black body with gobs of stereotypical infected foam. Massive initially before fizzing away coca-cola style. Aroma is of char, lightly soured malts, and a dash of chocolate. It honestly doesn't smell like much though. Taste is similar with light chocolate and char before going into a harsh lactic acid/cherry juice burn. Besides the sour flavor this is mostly devoid of flavor. It's almost as if the stout base nearly cancels out the infection leaving behind something so neutral and boring that the only reason for a drain pour would be for fear of the empty calories. Regardless I muscled on and finished this beer. I was really hoping for a decent aged stout and was left wondering how a store got $14 from me so easily. Bottle variation, improper storage, or a haphazard hand bottling incident; either way this seems like one to drink fresh.

Poured from bottle #928, from brew #1162. I poured this brew into a chalice. The beer pours with a very healthy head, foamy and frothy and out of control to start, with a light biege coloring on top, but a milk chocolate coloring towards the bottom. The head starts around three fingers deep, but slowly settles into a more reasonable half-inch. The nose is very aromatic, with hints of smoke, molasses sweetness, some dark roasted coffee bitterness, and a meaty characteristic. There almost seems to be a hint of steamed hot dogs in there. This beer clings on with a death grip to anything it touches. The body is thick, rich, and smooth. It's got a motor oil consistnecy to it, but more towards the used motor oil type. Flavors are roasty/toasty initially, with a good blast of coffee flavor, but quickly followed by the meaty, steamed hot dog flavor again. The beer has a very syrupy sweet undertone, like a rich molasses or simple syrup mixture. It clashes a bit with the rich and meaty characteristics, but not overwhelming in either direction. The beer has a light roasted mocha aftertaste to it, with a bit of an overcooked, steamed out resonance to the flavors. The finish lingers a bit, but not too long. It leaves a filmy, roasted, and wet feel/taste to the mouth. Good stab at this style, but there are definitely better offerings out there.
