Sampled at the 2003 Vermont Brewers Festival.

Pours with a deep, deep black body with a thin tan head. The aroma is quite pleasant, with some nice coffee and nutty notes. Taste was quite good and smooth, rolling over the tongue with nice smooth maltiness, but it came off as a bit weak on the finish. But very drinkable, and rather pleasant.

Had on tap at the Blue Mermaid. The beer pours a deep brown-to-black with almost red edges. There is a thin tan/white head that sits on top of the brew.

The smell is roasted malts and coffee. The coffee smell is a bit acrid, beyond that there is a hint of chocolate and dark fruits.

The taste is over-roasted malt and almost burnt coffee. There is some dark chocolate and also a cherry-like-sweetness. The finish carries a weird flavor. Not exactly bad, but it just doesn't seem to belong.

The mouthfeel is a little thin for a stout, but it's well carbonated and it's pretty drinkable. I would like to revisit this one, but I am not in a hurry.

Served on tap at Flatbread Pizza Co in Portsmouth NH. Served in a shaker pint glass.

Pours was a very dark brown, from a different angle, black. There was light foam a top and some lacing. Smell was a roasted dark malt, hints of coffee. Taste was a smooth balanced bitter, dark malts, dark chocolate, espresso beans. Light bodied in the mouthfeel - milky and smooth. Overall pretty good.

This stout is very dark brown, perhaps bordering on black. The head was tan, and quite creamy, though it shrinks down to a stable, thin layer. Lacing is lovely! Nose is roasty and coffee-like, though very mild for the style. It was smooth on the tongue, but the body was less than medium. I tend to like stouts with more body than this one has. Flavor has more coffee and roasty malt notes, and it then proceeds to become quite dry and bitter at the finish. It could have more overall "oomph" as far as flavors go, though. Still, it's a smooth, easy-drinking bier.

Served too cold at the North Conway source 11/26. Let it sit on the counter while I enjoyed a thai fish and lemongrass wrap. Moat Mt.'s food is soooo good.

Note: not a nitro pour, for those who appreciate the non-Guinness/Beamish stuff. Syrupy molasses-looking deep brown. Head a disappearing tan.

It's not bad, very drinkable for the style and even perhaps a stout suitable for hot days. You do need to be ready for this style, however.

Alburrito in Littleton, VT.

A- Black bodied ale poured into a pint glass. Dark mocha colored head forms to a decent size but does down fairly quickly, probably not optimal glassware. No lace, again the glasses must be mass machine washed.

S- Mostly dark roast malt and cocoa with some background hints of vanilla and caramel.

T- Takes on a stronger roast and even ashy smoked flavor. The roast cocoa is nice as well as some sweet caramel, vanilla and cherry/dark fruit notes.

MF- Creamy with a foamy lighter end stout body. Finishes with some roast bitterness.

A solid stout in a place I didn't expect to find one, a nice surprise. I hope to actually make it up to the Moat Mointain brewery itself.

Guest tap at the Portsmouth Brewery. Served in a pint glass, this was a dark brown, almost black, beer with a thick, sticky tan head. It had a mild roasted malt and coffee aroma, with perhaps a little bit of chocolate. The taste copied the aroma, but there was a nice lingering of the roasted malt. Pleasant beer, would drink it again

Had on tap at the Barleypub in Dover. I also enjoyed this with a slice of rich chocolate cake, courtesy of fellow BA's PurpleHops and Purplehats, so that made it even better. I normally don't go for stouts, but was intrigued as I'd never even heard of this brewery. Well, they do a good stout, that I can say. My full pint pour was opaque and dark, with some slight ruby highlights. It came topped with a small filmy latte colored head. Aroma was more subtle than expected, my notes tell me that there was some faint cocoa powder. Medium body, fresh tasting, smooth and roasted characteristics were the predominant flavors. I would be interested in trying more from this brewery.

Tried on tap at the brewpub on October 9, 2012.

The pour was very dark brown to nearly black with these kind of glistening ruby red hues around the tip of the glass. The head was brown.

The aroma was smoky like the food they serve at the restaurant with a load of coffee grinds, dark malts and a slight cherry character dropping hints that they were there.

The body tended to be thinner than I expected but still fell into the medium range.

The taste was bold an unassuming with dark malts and smoke but it had more of a Porter-like character. Low bitterness at the end.

had this after a fun day out in the sun on vacation! Definitely curious how they would define a foreign export stout:

A - nice rich black color with a solid dark tan head
S - Mild roasty grains / coffee notes dominate the aroma.
T - roasted grains, coffee notes, mild dark malts
M - not quite medium bodied, nicely carbonated with a medium dry light roasty finish.
D - paired very well with their brisket. Definitely a house friendly beer

I'd love to try this on a nitro pour. I always think of foreign export stouts as defined by guinness. This is definitely not guinness but is quite tasty in it's interpretation of the style.

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark, vibrant, ruby highlighted, dark brown coloring with a light tan, frothy head. The head retnetion is good, and it clings to everything as you drink. Subtle roasted coffee and smokey nose, with a mocha sweetness in the background. The flavors are rich, with a heavier smoke presence supporting the roasted coffee backbone. There are touches of chocolate throughout the palate, as well. Bitter and smokey aftertaste, with a slightly drying, rich finish. Very tasty.

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: roasted malt, coffee, cream, and chocolate

Taste: chocolate start followed by roasted malt and coffee with a touch of creaminess at the end.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy body, sweet and roasty with a bitter backbone, medium carbonation

Drinkability: A nice sipper that you cannot go wrong with ordering. I like how the beer transitions from a chocolate portion to a coffee portion. A very solid beer.

Served: Sampler from cask available from New England BrewFest.

A: Poured nearly black with a thin, tan head.

S: For the first 30 seconds I tried this brew I had a tough time placing where exactly I had the smell of this beer before. Then it came to me. It smelled just like Chocolate and/or Toffee Taffy. There was a bitterness to the chocolate smell that could not only be described as chocolaty.

T: See above for general taste as well. More bitter that typical stouts I've tried. I don't know if that made a difference between cask and typical tap.

M: Full bodied. Very dry finish that seemed to evaporate from the tongue.

D: After one glass, I was finished with this and ready for a different drink. I didn't give this a bad grade because I was trying several beres at a festival and, also, aren't most stouts a bit filling.

Overall I would definitely give this another try if Moat Mountain was more readily available in my area.

Screw-top growler filled at the brewpub.

First imperial pint pours with a 1/2" dark brown head, over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Head dwindles at an average pace, with leggy lasting lace. Aroma is sweet dark roasted grains. Taste starts with coffee, chocolate and anise, sweet in the middle, and closes with a light hoppiness. Coffee flavor lingers after the swallow. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is very nice as well. Good brew all around.

Had a keg at my brew club.

Light rich head over very dark almost black semi thick.

Nose of creamy Belgian like stout almost lager like. Light smoke and roast. Some oatmeal and chewy malts.

Taste brings some chocolate and little roast, oatmeal, little crystal malt, touch of smoke. Some light bitterness and earthy hops. Toasty and a little chewy with some nice bitterness. Finishes with a nice lingering hoppy bitterness and some sticky mouth coating dark malts some creamy oatmeal.

Mouth is slightly heavier with decent carbonation.

A decent drinkability with some sticky mouth coating feel but dries a bit and mostly clean for a dark stout.

A solid stout. Black, black colour with a heavy tan, sticky head and thick lace and swirls. Black malt nose with mild roastedness. Roasted malt flavors with chocolate taste that becomes more evident with warmth. Dry medium-heavy body.

Great beverage. The right dry body with roasted malts and hints of chocolate. Cheers!

Served in a 20 oz tumbler.

Appearance: This beer poured a small mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank. It is pitch black with no clarity or bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: roasted coffee, chocolate, smoke, and bready oats.

Taste: Same as above. Pretty nice and tasty beer.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full bodied, medium carbonation, smoky, and very drinkable.

Overall: Pretty nice stout. I love stopping here after snowboarding.

Appearance: Black, with a thin beige head.

Smell: Coffee, maybe some chocolate. Some roasted malts in the backround.

Mouthfeel/Taste: I would say a medium to full bodied beer, but smooth. Tasted mostly of coffee.

Overall: One of the better Stouts I have tried, as I am not big into Stouts in the first place, but I would drink this one again for sure.

Pours a dark brown/black, topped with a two finger dark khaki head. Leaves thick wide webs of lacing behind.
Roasty, earthy aroma, chocolate and burnt coffee beans.
Earthy - 'dirty' taste (I mean that in a good way), herbs on top of a chocolaty malt base, a touch of licorice and a lot of coffee. A bit acrid.
Medium-full bodied, creamy

20oz. pour on tap at the Smoke House.

Wish I remembered to bring my growler. I would've filled one up.

Deep dark chocolate color, with a small head. They pour these ice cold, and right to the top of the glass, which is hard to complain about, but I would have rather had it slightly warmer, and with a little more head. Very small tan head, not much lace. I tried to let this one warm up, but ultimately poured it down my gullet fast. Very smooth and creamy, ultimately drinkable. Chocolately and slightly bitter. Very dry, which I enjoy. If I wasn't on a N. Conway shopping excursion, I would've guzzled a couple more. Great stout, nothing over the top.

Sampled on tap at Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth, NH.

This stout poured a deep black color with brown foam that settled quickly and left a shiny, mirror-like black surface. The smell was nice and strong: sweet very dark malt, coffee, and a hint of banana (??). The taste was slightly sweet, dark malt and roasted barley with some fruit (banana), coffee, a hint of dark chocolate, and a low, background hop bitterness throughout. The flavor lingered on the tongue nicely. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium-full body and low carbonation feel. This was a good stout, but would have been better with a bit more carbonation or perhaps nitrogenation from a nitro tap.

Couldn’t figure out a way to cross it with this one on 6/4/2005. 16-oz. shaker pour at the Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth, NH.

About an 1/8-inch of foam starts, but settles like America’s Greatest Hero when he was learning to fly. Pitch black hue, but I can go on further to describe it as somehow faking, in a way. Corpuscular oats and washed, acid roasted malt, with a touch of burnt caramel on the nose. Crank of notty frangal, shot of smoke, and a nice chocolate underflow play on the mouth.

I found this to be very smooth, though an attenuating smoke hits the roof of the mouth, and leaves a trace of chalky character lying around. On the whole though, it stand up well. I found this pour to be more subtle, in some ways, than the one I had previously.

Had on-tap at the source, before getting a growler fill.

A: Arrives black as all get out, with a dark brown head that fades fairly quickly. Handsome enough, with no lacing, but not unusually beautiful.

S: Very roasty, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate. A real pleaser.

T: Taste follows nose, with the roastiness being prominent, followed by some coffee and chocolate notes, and a healthy balanced bitterness. There's a distant licorice note in there, but it's very faint. Overall, a really nice, roasty, well-balanced taste.

M: A bit creamy, very smooth, but definitely on the lighter end for a stout. Personally I don't mind the lightness, but also wouldn't mind a bit more body.

O: This is one of my favorite Moat beers, and a really nice stout. The roastiness was perfect after a hike, and I imagine even better in the dead of winter. They really nail an excellent balance of bitterness and roastiness for the style. Very drinkable.

Growler filled at Moat Mountain Brewery last night and poured this afternoon.

Fully opaque black with a full fluffy tan head and sticky, well retained lace.

Scent is roasty coffee and soft bittersweet chocolate. A hint of smoke perhaps.

Soft chocolate flavors, roasty notes, roasted coffee and a very subtle citrus hop note in the background. Not a particularly sweet stout, in fact there actually seems to be the tiniest hint of sourness when rolled to the sides of the tongue. The roasty qualities are perhaps a bit understated for an export stout, though they are certainly present. There's a nice bitterness that lingers on the tongue while you contemplate the next sip.

Oily and slick medium mouthfeel, little carbonation.

Very easy to drink. Each sip left me wanting another and when the pint emptied I refilled it immediately.

This is a delicious stout and I'd happily drink it again.

Pours dark and near black with minimal head. Scent is a moderately strong mix of roasted grain mixed with dark chocolate milk and freshly ground espresso. Taste follows scent, solid roast, chocolate and coffee notes, lightly sweet with light notes of dark fruit thrown in. Fuller side of medium bodied smooth but with a bit of grainy and powdery heft. A good drinkable, full flavored stout in a time where many places strive for big.
