A = I enjoyed this on tap, but in a plastic cup at a local ski area's pub, so it was hard to really judge the appearance properly. It is a coffee-colored brew, with a medium, short-lived head, but I think that may have been the cup.

S = Lovely porter smell. Malty and yeasty, with a slight coffee and interesting "other" detected.

T = Outstanding. I drank three pints over the afternoon and my palate did not tire of the flavor. The malts are nicely balanced, no over-hopping, and there is no unpleasant, lingering aftertaste. Finishes very clean..

M = Lighter than some porters on the palate, but the flavor was definitely not lacking. Did I mention that it finishes clean?

O = One of my favorite porters, and I wish it were sold by the bottle. I may have to go back to the ski area pub soon! It is light enough to pair well with any pub menu offering, and for the hop-weary palate, this would make a very welcome alternative. Don't let your "dark beer phobia" keep you from trying this one, if you're lucky enough to have it as an offering!

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a cloudy, muddled, hazelnut-brown coloring with a thin, filmy, sparse head. The nose is nutty sweet, without the smoke of bitter characteristics to balance. The flavors are of coffee and nut, both smooth and slightly dry. The aftertaste is bittersweet, with hints of chocolate sprinkled along the coffee backbone. Dry, slick finish. Not bad, but lighter bodied than I was hoping for.

20oz. pour on tap from the Smoke House.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a smoked porter, or if the smoke house part of the title is just a reference to the brewery. I didn't pick up on any smokiness, so I'm guessing it's the latter.

Dark brown, nearing black beer, with very little head or lacing. Roasted malt and bitter coffee notes. Very dry, medium carbonation, and light to medium bodied for such a dark beer.

This is a very enjoyable, and dry porter with a nice cola mouthfeel, great dry roasty finish. Nothing over the top, but thoroughly enjoyable imo.

In a pint glass the beer was a chestnut brown color with a small tan head and a bit of lace.
Pleasant roasted malt aroma with a tinge of smokiness.
Mostly chocolate taste, a little bit of coffee, and some late hops. I lost the smoke that was in the aroma.
Smooth beer, a little on the meek side.
It went well with my pizza.

Appearance: minimal head, hazy, chestnut brown in color

Smell: roasted malt and chocolate

Taste: roasted malt and chocolate, minimal smoke

Mouthfeel: medium body, sweet with a nice semi-bitter backbone, medium carbonation

Drinkability: Probably my least favorite of the Moat Mt beers I tried. I could have a couple as there is nothing bad about this beer. Nothing really jumps out either. I was definitely expecting more of a smoky taste.

Screw-top growler filled at the brewpub.

First imperial pint pours with a 1/2" dark tan head, over the clear coppery brown brew. Head recedes slowly, with sticky lasting lace. Aroma is dark roastiness, with a light smoke character. Taste follows along, slightly acrid dark malts upfront, some smoke in the middle, and lightly hoppy close. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is okay as well. Lacks a bit of sweetness that I think would help pull it all together, but a good brew regardless.

i drink this at the brewpub quite a bit. this past weekend, my girlfriend and i were at our usual places at the bar and the temp was around 10 degrees. we'd been out snowshoeing all day and i decided to depart from my beloved ipa and have a porter. man was it right for a cold night.

i took a growler home and drank it last night.

dark brown, almost black. big head with a hard pour. smoky smoky taste. leaves a big lace. as lacy as your grandma's undies!

among the top porters i've had. this and stovepipe are my top 2.
