Appearance: Pours a near black body with some reddish hints to it and capped by a well-sized, beige head.
Smell: Dark malt aroma, predominately, with a touch of chocolate and molasses. Lesser notes of vanilla and oak. To my dismay, there's also a teensy, worrisome touch of sourness up in this bouqet.
Taste: Dark maltiness with tastes of chocolate and a few globs of gooey molasses. Restrained sweetness. some dark fruits. Minor hints of vanilla, oak, and light brown sugar. There's a noticeable bit of sourness within. All the flavors make a curtain call in the slightly warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Not too bad beyond that sour twang in the flavor. I'm sure it's nothing a little tinkering and adjusting couldn't cure.

Found this on the shelf of a small beer store. I think it's an 08.
A: Light brown and a small head to go along with it.
S: Vanilla, chocolate, a little booze
T: Whiskey, burnt sugars, vanilla, some creme - very nice
M: Light carbonation and a really good texture
D: Really enjoyed this one. Can't see having it very often with how big it was but a unique offering that was impressive.

A: Poured a dark, near black color with a light cinnamon/beige colored head that was creamy and well lasting but left little lacing.
S: boozy with an oaky alcohol aroma along with some vanilla and dry bitter chocolate.
T: a slight astringency. The beer was aged in 10yr old oak cask barrels that once held whiskey which is very noticeable in both the nose and flavor. A big alcohol flavor of whiskey. 7.8 abv but drinks much bigger greets you from the get go. There is some slight burnt malting and charred woodiness with an earthy bitterness as well. Some dark burnt sugars add just a hint of sweetness as well some dry vanilla creamer notes. The huge whiskey flavor is huge, perhaps a tad to much so and is comparable to dropping a shot in a 12oz glass of dark beer.
M: thin with light carbonation while the oaky vanilla alcohol flavor just takes over dominating the tongue.
D: Not bad but just way to much whiskey flavor in my beer to enjoy in 120z. Maybe if left to mellow a bit through aging this could be much more subtle and drinkable, otherwise while fresh was a little strong.

22 Oz Bottle. Rich bourbon vanilla, oak, bourbon browned malt sugars and nips of candied licorice. Warm, creamy and rich. Pours dark brown-black with creamy tan head. Flavor starts very warm, with lots of barrel char, some scotch alcohols, nips of fusels, a run of burnt coffee and a hot hand of 77% dark chocolate. Moves into a mingling of hops and fragrant malt character. A touch hot, but a fairly decent melding of barrel and beer. Higher hopping enjoyable, and working well with oak dryness. Could use a touch more density and creaminess, but overall a well-done. Bits of salty sea oats. Thanks Sean!

It pours a rich, deep mahogany, pretty ruby along the edges. A finger of loose, light tan head ebbs soon to frothy globules. Points of lacing minimalize the inside of the glass.
The aroma swirls bittersweet roasted malt, toying with dark chocolate, coffee, port, bourbon oak, cola, and licorice. A mere floral hint of hops caresses a veritably present spine of alcohol.
Upon tasting, there's a flow of slightly charred but mildly sweet roasted malt, with plum, raisin, and smokey oak in play. A vinous note hints at port, and is joined by a strident tendon of seemingly mentholated alcohol. The grain replays briefly before sneaky hops bitter things rather abruptly, leading to a lingering dry finish. It seems like a compressed, almost rushed version of the aroma, but it's still a decently crafted profile.
Medium bodied, the combination of malt, cooling alcohol, and bitter hops keeps the palate awake.
The aroma starts with plenty going on, but pretty much leisurely. Then the flavor compacts the elements into a more concentrated and harder to read burst. The one real distraction, though, is the gleaming streak of alcohol that tries to part the flavor like Moses and the Red Sea. And that ABV goes a long way toward keeping consumption well in line. It's a beefy bugger that has some in the plus column, and is worth a try.

***This one was a gusher - poured all over my bar and left a nice trail all the way to the bathroom sink. Why do the majority of Arcadia beers do this (and why don't I remember that until too late!).***
Poured a dark, dark brown with a large sized off white head. Aromas of wood, vanilla, anise, and bourbon. Tastes of ligher wood, vanilla, brown sugar, roast, and light chocolate. For some reason, both the aromas and tastes reminded me a little of root beer.

Tons of carbonation bubbles come up through a deep brown brew with slight light around the edges. It has a light, billowy large cola head.
Nose is heavy whiskey, with some malts. Very oaky.
Taste is more whiskey, roasted malts, and alcohol warming in the throat. Heavy whiskey flavors are not really my style, but this seems to be well done and if you're a whiskey lover you'll enjoy this beer.
Mouthfeel is pretty good. Drinkability is ok but not great, because of the whiskey. Kind of a sipper, but still quite nice.

22 ounce bomber bottle, no freshness info offered. Pours darkest brown with orangy light shining through the edges of the glass, dark tan, middle of the road head and minor lacing. Nose of vanilla, and smoke. Intense flavors here of wood, burnt grains and smoke. Decent enough porter, perhaps a little thin, went well with some bread cheese and nuts. Not my favorite offering from Arcadia, but worth a try anyway

Wow, is this an interesting beer. Not perfect by any means, but very interesting.
Pours almost black, more like a deep brown, with very little head. The nose is quite sharp -- lots of alcohol and bourbon aromas in there, lots of vanilla, along with chocolate and espresso. Very baltic porter-like. It's not terribly pleasant, but it sure is compelling. On the tongue, there's malt sweetness, then bitterness, and then a big alcoholic burn that's reminscent of the hard alcohol that, apparently, formerly occupied this beer's aging barrels. Surprisingly thin mouthfeel, coupled with a sticky film on the back of the tongue, reduce this one's drinkability. But man, is this one interesting. I'd love to actually see the process of making this one.
Overall, this one is flawed (alcoholic burn, not enough body, overly overt bourbon aromas) but fascinating. I always like to see beers like this -- they don't entirely succeed, but they try real hard and end up being far more interesting than even most of the micro dreck out there.

I didn't realize that this was a whiskey barrel aged beer before I tried it - so that first sip was a shocker. It pours a very dark color with a moderate head that falls quickly and leaves a bit of lacing on the glass. The aroma has a lot of dark malt character with chocolate, but the whiskey comes through as well to create a complex combination. Quite sweet and flavorful flavor with plenty of dark roasted malts combining with a very strong whiskey/bourbon flavor. The body is medium and the drinkability is ok considering the extremely strong flavor of the whiskey.

A- This beer has a deep dense brown body with a hint of brown glow from the base. There is a light tan head of foam that sticks to the side of the glass forming a big meniscus. The body is a bit too dense to see any carbonation.
S- A faint sour cherry note gives way to a big woody oak smell and then to dark roasted malt supported by a soft dark coco powder note.
T- The big woody oak flavor seems to grow larger with each sip. There are supporting flavors of a soft sweet and sour notes, roasted black malt and some toasted malt flavors. A dark raisin note comes through before the finish of soft chocolate malt and chalk finish the beer.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel iwth a tight fizz finish but no alcohol heat noticed.
D- The slight funk hint of sour is a nice twist to a barrel aged porter, but the barrel keeps punching me in the mouth and I can't appreciate the rest of the flavors. I know there is a very nice Porter underneath.

Nice deep brown color-slight cocoa colored head on top. Very oakey and whiskey like aroma. Good flavor-some roasted malt against a huge whiskey flavor. Tends to be over done for my own personal liking. Oak flavor is way up front as well. Decent level of lactic sweetness-comes across as a sweet stout in spots. Nice body-very smooth and the sweet stout quality balances the overdone oakiness and whiskey. Quite drinkable though not my thing all around. Enjoyable-I would recommend in small doses for sure.

I didn't get detailed notes on this one from the Goose Island Beer Academy tasting on October 28, 2009 but this didn't really impress compared to other offerings. It comes across as a solid Baltic style Porter, the barrel aging is minimal, deep chocolate malts and roastiness, but as a special offering it falls a bit short for my tastes. Underperforms most of the Tyranena offerings, my favorite for Imperial porters.

What it is! Not my favorite style for summer quaffing but a nice treat on a hot summer's day anyhow. HUGE vanilla and oak from the barrel on the nose, also plum, licorice, espresso, and a touch of tobacco. Perfect tan head leaves a merengue-like film on the side of my tasting glass (from the 1st ever Gitchee Gumi fest, heh heh) and makes me think of dessert. A smokey, tannic dessert beer? Sure, why not. Velvety-smooth with soft carbonation on the first sip, but with a nice hop bite and significant bitterness braced-up against the malt complexity. Notes of green apple in the aromatics, along with complex phenols and warming alcohol. A sipper, not a beer for easy quaffing or light cuisines . . . probably great with cigars. Definitely cellarable and worth stashing a bottle. While this certainly isn't a beer for everyong, it is a beer for me.
Way to go, Arcadia!

Thru the years I have thought of Arcadia to be hit or miss with there wares,alot of their "big" beers havent lived up to expectations that I had for them.
2008 version.Poured a deep cola color with a creamy toasted almond colored one finger head,aromas mainly of chocolate,dark fruit,and oak induced vanilla notes.The oak is much more pronounced on the palate with some vanilla and wood,dark fruit and bitter chocolate round out the flavors with a bit of sweetish alcohol showing thru more as the beer warmed.Its a solid Baltic porter but not mind blowing.

Pours out an opaque black Stout color with a decent head of cream with lots of big bubbles on top. Laces in patches and smaller marks. Aroma has Irish coffee elements, some reminders of red wine and oak from the barrel conditioning. Mouthfeel is nice to begin with, creamy with subdued carbonation. Flavor features lots of bitter dark chocolate with a snap of vinous raisins and current and highlighting the bourbon casks. It also has good persistance, but perhaps the carbonation (initially smooth) seems a little too active at the end. Plenty of aftertaste, perhaps with a small touch of hops re-inforcing the roasty bittering of the brew, along with some smokey whiskey flavors. Arcadia has a wide range of beers to my tastes, this one works for me.

I haven't seen this one on the shelves for some time now, so I'm guessing this is the 2008 vintage. Review is from notes taken on 12/12/2010 and poured from the bottle to a snifter.
Appearance: Pour is the standard deep dark brown/near black, like coffee, but it has some dark ruby and chestnut highlights near the edges and at the very bottom of the glass; starts with a 1/2 finger creamy tan head that fades immediately to a thin wisp of a skim and an uneven milky ring around the surface; body is nearly opaque, with the exception of the highlights mentioned above; only a couple strands and spots of lacing are left behind as an oily residue makes it slide back into the drink.
Smell: A lot of vanilla right up front, which is awesome, I love picking up on vanilla and just a touch of caramel; some earthy roast in there; a bit of barrel as well; not quite as robust as I would like, but I really like the sweet vanilla that comes out
Taste: Pretty impressive -- a good array of flavors that are well blended -- the sweet and oaky vanilla blends with the earthy roast; a definite presence of dark fruit that is just a little tart (cherry, perhaps?) and just a bit of caramel; an aged presence of alcohol as well that is pretty mellow, but still effective in the set of flavors.
Mouthfeel: Body is just a bit lighter than medium and the carbonation is there, but nearly a non-presence as it is "just" prickly and then fades to a smooth, near flat body (not awful for a 12% porter though, as I wouldn't expect it to be overly carbonated; a moderately thick and dry sticky coating is left all over the palate; for being 12%, the alcohol really creates no burn at all, but the belly is left just a little warm.
Drinkability: Definitely a sipper, but a tasty one. I like the well-rounded set of flavors, but do wish the body was a bit thicker (I guess not every porter can be as viscous as Black Butte XX, which may have unfortunately set the bar a little too high for me); ABV is definitely a factor in this being limited to a 22 oz. bottle by myself, and demands that I enjoy it over the course of at least 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours.
