It pours a rich, deep mahogany, pretty ruby along the edges. A finger of loose, light tan head ebbs soon to frothy globules. Points of lacing minimalize the inside of the glass.

The aroma swirls bittersweet roasted malt, toying with dark chocolate, coffee, port, bourbon oak, cola, and licorice. A mere floral hint of hops caresses a veritably present spine of alcohol.

Upon tasting, there's a flow of slightly charred but mildly sweet roasted malt, with plum, raisin, and smokey oak in play. A vinous note hints at port, and is joined by a strident tendon of seemingly mentholated alcohol. The grain replays briefly before sneaky hops bitter things rather abruptly, leading to a lingering dry finish. It seems like a compressed, almost rushed version of the aroma, but it's still a decently crafted profile.

Medium bodied, the combination of malt, cooling alcohol, and bitter hops keeps the palate awake.

The aroma starts with plenty going on, but pretty much leisurely. Then the flavor compacts the elements into a more concentrated and harder to read burst. The one real distraction, though, is the gleaming streak of alcohol that tries to part the flavor like Moses and the Red Sea. And that ABV goes a long way toward keeping consumption well in line. It's a beefy bugger that has some in the plus column, and is worth a try.

I haven't seen this one on the shelves for some time now, so I'm guessing this is the 2008 vintage. Review is from notes taken on 12/12/2010 and poured from the bottle to a snifter.

Appearance: Pour is the standard deep dark brown/near black, like coffee, but it has some dark ruby and chestnut highlights near the edges and at the very bottom of the glass; starts with a 1/2 finger creamy tan head that fades immediately to a thin wisp of a skim and an uneven milky ring around the surface; body is nearly opaque, with the exception of the highlights mentioned above; only a couple strands and spots of lacing are left behind as an oily residue makes it slide back into the drink.

Smell: A lot of vanilla right up front, which is awesome, I love picking up on vanilla and just a touch of caramel; some earthy roast in there; a bit of barrel as well; not quite as robust as I would like, but I really like the sweet vanilla that comes out

Taste: Pretty impressive -- a good array of flavors that are well blended -- the sweet and oaky vanilla blends with the earthy roast; a definite presence of dark fruit that is just a little tart (cherry, perhaps?) and just a bit of caramel; an aged presence of alcohol as well that is pretty mellow, but still effective in the set of flavors.

Mouthfeel: Body is just a bit lighter than medium and the carbonation is there, but nearly a non-presence as it is "just" prickly and then fades to a smooth, near flat body (not awful for a 12% porter though, as I wouldn't expect it to be overly carbonated; a moderately thick and dry sticky coating is left all over the palate; for being 12%, the alcohol really creates no burn at all, but the belly is left just a little warm.

Drinkability: Definitely a sipper, but a tasty one. I like the well-rounded set of flavors, but do wish the body was a bit thicker (I guess not every porter can be as viscous as Black Butte XX, which may have unfortunately set the bar a little too high for me); ABV is definitely a factor in this being limited to a 22 oz. bottle by myself, and demands that I enjoy it over the course of at least 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours.

label notes 2008 vintage, 220z bomber, poured into nonic pint glass.

A - extremely dark brown, almost black, with tan head which disapates into a thin covered. however, nice lacing that remains stuck to the glass

S - dark roasted malt, vanilla, burnt sugar

T - a little licorice, sweetness, whiskey

M - typical of a porter - lower carbonation, very smooth

D - since the label doesn't list it, I would have no idea this is 12%abv. the barrel aging and the 2 years of aging since has done it wonders, as this honestly tastes no stonger than your typical 4% or 5% session porter

A - Dark, almost black, brown with a large head that lingers for minutes, then leaves clumps of lacing clinging to the sides of the glass.

S - Slight molasses, alcohol, prune and coffee (faint).

T - Sour, too sour, alcohol, molasses, raisins, coffee, oak, faint bourbon - a sharp ascerbic sour is present before the shift to the citric acid sour and coffee bitterness in the aftertaste.

M - Smooth, thin, a bit acidic, harsh after the swallow, a bit astringent, thirst quenching at least.

D - Somehow not too bad. I don't think I will have this again, but the entire bomber went down easily. Many better beers of this style are out there, but, in spite of the sourness, this pulled off enjoyable.

Pours up a nice, deep, dark brown...almost black. Two-fingers of thick, creamy, light brown foam sit on top, where it just stays and stays. Lacing is pretty good.

Mild notes of coffees and chocolates. Nice hint of whiskey and oak. Mild touch of oxidation. Hints of brown sugar.

Instant coffee and cocoa powder, along with a mild roasty maltiness. Definite hints of whiskey, which is nice. Mild oakiness. I believe that the oxidation is bringing about a slight 'twang' that shouldn't be here. Not overpowering, but makes for an odd finish.

On the lighter side of full-bodied. Very smooth and nicely creamy.

This is very tasty, but I'd love to be able to try a fresh bottle, for comparison factors.

Almost pitch black with a small tan head that drops pretty quick leaving some light scattered lace. Sweet caramel comes out first only to be drowned out with booze and an out of place fruitiness. Aroma is just a mess with too much alcohol and not much else able to show through. Flavor starts off with a bit of sweetness and some strange ripe fruitiness. Some burnt and woody notes peak through before the bourbon takes over. Really bad alcohol burn fruity finish that is just as much a mess as the aroma. Mouthfeel was decent except the burn. No drinkability here for me it was a drain pour after forcing my way through the first glass. I waited to review till I had my second bottle figuring I had on off bottle but it was identical. A very appropriately named beer.

Wow, is this an interesting beer. Not perfect by any means, but very interesting.

Pours almost black, more like a deep brown, with very little head. The nose is quite sharp -- lots of alcohol and bourbon aromas in there, lots of vanilla, along with chocolate and espresso. Very baltic porter-like. It's not terribly pleasant, but it sure is compelling. On the tongue, there's malt sweetness, then bitterness, and then a big alcoholic burn that's reminscent of the hard alcohol that, apparently, formerly occupied this beer's aging barrels. Surprisingly thin mouthfeel, coupled with a sticky film on the back of the tongue, reduce this one's drinkability. But man, is this one interesting. I'd love to actually see the process of making this one.

Overall, this one is flawed (alcoholic burn, not enough body, overly overt bourbon aromas) but fascinating. I always like to see beers like this -- they don't entirely succeed, but they try real hard and end up being far more interesting than even most of the micro dreck out there.

Presentation: 22oz brown pop top bomber with nice label; 2008 vintage

Appearance: Somewhat hazy, dark brown (nearly black) beer with a medium tan head with decent retention.

Smell: Lots of sweet dark chocolate and a pleasant (mild) dark fruity booziness as well. Sweet dark malt as well. Not a large burnt or roasted malt presence. A really nice toasted nut presence emerges as this warms. This is vibrant and pretty mellow at the same time.

Taste: Lots of boozy dark fruit up front, with some mild burnt grain and a hint of toasty wood in the background as well. Ends medium-bitter and slightly burnt. It's not a complicated flavor profile, but it's pleasant nonetheles.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied, nice level of carbonation

Drinkability: Pretty high

Conclusion: This is really a pretty ncie Baltic Porter. The wood notes are restrained but clearly preasent (which I like) and though the beer doesn't have a ton of depth, it's tasty and well-crafted. At $4.99 it's an absolute steal. At the regular $9.99 it's still a pretty good deal.

22 Oz Bottle. Rich bourbon vanilla, oak, bourbon browned malt sugars and nips of candied licorice. Warm, creamy and rich. Pours dark brown-black with creamy tan head. Flavor starts very warm, with lots of barrel char, some scotch alcohols, nips of fusels, a run of burnt coffee and a hot hand of 77% dark chocolate. Moves into a mingling of hops and fragrant malt character. A touch hot, but a fairly decent melding of barrel and beer. Higher hopping enjoyable, and working well with oak dryness. Could use a touch more density and creaminess, but overall a well-done. Bits of salty sea oats. Thanks Sean!

The second installment of the Brew Crew Big Beer Series. Packaged in bombers featuring what looks like a sailing ship from the 19th century beached and laying on its port side with a lone figure walking precariously along the upturned starboard.. Side of the label sez, "Marooned on a deserted island after a violent storm shipwrecked him, Brewer John Osborne used whatever raw materials and supplies he could salvage from the flotsam of the wreckage to brew his beloved Porter, including oak barrels that once held 10-year old whiskey. Rescue could now wait! This legend and our Brew Crew Big Beer Series continues...."

This Porter was aged for six months in Evan Williams casks.

Undated bomber purchased at Merchant's in Dearborn, MI and poured into an imperial pint glass.

Damn near black with some hints of reddish brown at the edges. Tan head that rises up and threatens to spill before settling down to a few dense centimeters. Good retention with thick sheeted lace left clinging to the glass.

The nose has lots of bourbon and a good amount of rasted malts and chocolate. Deep, rich and warming. Not as intense as the aromas in the Founders Kentucky Breakfast, but its damn good.

The taste follows along the lines as the nose but it also has a good nutty flavor that works really well. The bourbon flavors are not hot and unrestrained. They add a sweetness that works well with the roasted notes. A bit of alcoholic heat in the back with some lingering heat and roasted flavors in the aftertaste. Well rounded, at least for someone who loves bourbon. Some may appreciate this beer a little more after some aging but I like it now.

For style, the mouth was right on. Full and smooth with no oily residuals. For those of us who like bourbon and bigger beers, this is a real winner and was worth the wait.

Tons of carbonation bubbles come up through a deep brown brew with slight light around the edges. It has a light, billowy large cola head.
Nose is heavy whiskey, with some malts. Very oaky.
Taste is more whiskey, roasted malts, and alcohol warming in the throat. Heavy whiskey flavors are not really my style, but this seems to be well done and if you're a whiskey lover you'll enjoy this beer.
Mouthfeel is pretty good. Drinkability is ok but not great, because of the whiskey. Kind of a sipper, but still quite nice.

I found this 22oz brown bomber bottle at the Binny's store in Plainfield, IL for $7.99.
2007 vintage opened in 2010.

The beer pours a dark brown, almost black color, with a touch of ruby red highlights when held to light. It made a huge 4-finger fast rising light brown head, so be careful with the pour. The head lasts several minutes and leaves tons of thick lacing - resembling a root beer float.

Nice whiskey/raisin smell along with some wood, cocoa, and faint coffee aromas.

The whiskey/raisin taste dominates, but there are plenty of other flavors in here as well. Roasted and even burnt malts provide balance along with some vanilla and cocoa for sweetness. Hop bitterness is low but there is some in here. A very tasty porter with a whiskry/alcohl kick.

Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with a warming alcohol feel to it The low to moderate carbonation is a bit odd for a porter, but it seems to work well here.

At 12% alcohol you would think this one would be a sipper, but I had no trouble quaffing down a few big gulps.

Pours deep brown, turning black in the glass with a density that’s a touch light for the bourbon barrel beers, but denser than most porters. The age on this one has thinned out the carbonation a touch, but still about a half inch of head, a bit of lacing, and the head lingers well.

Strong sweet nose of vanila bourbon, nearly cold bottle of bourbon in nature. The finish is a powdery cocoa malt. Hopefully it opens up more as it warms.

Wow sickeningly sweet combination of sugar and bourbon with chocolate malts mixed in. Bourbon has just dominated this one and age has mellowed (I assume) any of porter nature. I feel this porter just wasn’t bold enough to handle this much bourbon aging. I should point out I’ve had issues with infections (or maybe Arcadia just makes awful explosive messes of beers) so perhaps part of the sweetness in here is something similar to what I notice with Cocoa Loco and Big Dick.

Smooth and creamy. This one drinks well. Medium thin for a bourbon barrel much like the appearance, but does the job.

I really like this one. This is an awful awful example but this bourbon dominance here reminds me a bit of Goose Island Rare, you know without this being a pappy barrel and the beer base being most likely just an ok porter vs a world glass masterpiece of a stout. It also doesn’t have the world class finish, in fact the finish is a touch lacking.

Arcadia Ales Shipwreck Porter pours a stiff brown head over
an inky black brew. The nose is amazing- fruit, mocha, wood,
and alcohol- almost a port or madeira quality to it. The flavor
is likewise complex- big malt flavors, wood, dark fruits, tannin
from the oak barrels this stuff was stored in, and a bit of tartness
from that environment as well. Mouthfeel is full and round, with
a very long dry finish to it. Alchohol is a constant, if well modulated
presence, but it's only obvious as a warming effect. The bottle does
not list the alcohol by volume, but I would advise anyone trying this
to plan on staying in that night. This fine brew is not to be taken lightly!

Pours black with a light brown head with some decent retention. Initial smell is large on sugary vanilla, also has some bourbony alcohol and roastiness. As i get further into it, the smoky roasty aroma and alcohol aroma become stronger. Taste starts with a nice roasted malt flavor, then a sweet creamy vanilla and cola-y flavor followed up by some nice alcohol presence and more roastiness with a little tang. This beer is fairly creamy on the palette with a decent size body and also a fair but proportionate amount of spicy alcohol and a large amount of acidic tanginess. I enjoy this beer, it definitely seems bigger than 7.8 abv and may be too rich to sample too much of but 22 oz is perfect tonight.

Bottle shows 2007 vintage on label, however label does not confirm abv. Listed here @ 7.8 2008 vintage is at 11%. I can say there is alcohol in the beer but just not how much.

Pours nearly black with a coffee two cream colored head. Retention is quite decent with some lacing left.

Oak character is quite strong but not overstated. Good amount of vanilla aroma. Roasted malt and a slight smokiness rounds out the smell quite nicely.

Once again the oak is very noticeable in the taste as it was in the nose. Coffee and maybe slight chocolate taste appear under the woodiness. Light vanilla flavor as well. Alcohol is slightly warming.

Medium to just shy of full bodied. Drinks very smooth. Lower carbonation but well suited.

Rather enjoyable and easy to drink. Though I would not want more than a bottle.

A- Pours a light black color with dark ruby highlights. The head is big and fluffy and tan in color. Some HUGE thick lacing is present.

S- Big chocolate aromas, cream, some buttery oaky aromas, some bourbon, some dark fruit is also evident.

T- Starts out a bit tart and almost sour, then moves into notes of chocolate, some bourbon and some oakiness. The finish has some coffee notes and is relatively dry.

M- The tart/sour initial twang is a little off-putting, but as it warms, it lessens. Carbonation is appropriate.

D- The initial slightly tart/sour note is a touch off-putting but this is a pretty nice bourbon aged porter.

Picked up at Merchant's in Dearborn ten days ago. Poured black, opaque with red-brown edges when held under a bright light. The head was modest and tan in colour, small bubble carbonation that was slow and steady. Some lacing. Smells of roast coffee, bitter dark chocolate, licorice. There is a sharp, bitter dark chocolate taste as well, with an aggressive mouthfeel and a snappy, whiskey-sour taste that lingers. Unfortunately, I found an alcohol presence detracted from the drinkability factor and inspired a more sour finish than was desirable. This is worth a try and could be much better if the recipe was tinkered with just a bit. As it stands, I'll manage to finish this large bottle but wouldn't think of haviing another.

Pours a very dark brown with a a nice bit of tan foam and an aroma of bourbon and cocoa. The head settles slowly leaving some lace. This is a good looking beer. The first sip yields raisin, fig and cocoa flavors, plus something mysteriious I can't quite pin down...ah, that would be bourbon! A lactic note accents these flavors, which adds compexity, but accentuates the sweetness a bit too much for me. The finish is warming and rather boozy, with the malt and hops pretty much in balance. The mouthfeel is fairly smooth, but the body is quite thin. In some respects, this is how I imagine porter might have tasted 150 years ago back in England; strong with lots "dark" fruity flavors. Overall, this is pretty enjoyable, but it needs more body and a little less alcohol.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle. Leaves one finger of an espresso-foam colored head, and it has excellent retention, and it leaves very good lacing. Body is the deepest brown possible, almost black.

Smell - rather simple, but mouthwatering nonetheless. There is vanilla, roasted malt, raisins, prunes, and some spicy alcohol.

Taste - exactly as promised by the smell. Vanilla, roasted malt, and dried dark fruits like raisins and plums, all flooding the tongue. There is yet more roasted malt on the finish and the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - full-bodied, and semi-dry at times.

Drinkability - this is an excellent ale. It is just a little high in abv to be sessionable, but if you excersize caution, it might just be so.

What it is! Not my favorite style for summer quaffing but a nice treat on a hot summer's day anyhow. HUGE vanilla and oak from the barrel on the nose, also plum, licorice, espresso, and a touch of tobacco. Perfect tan head leaves a merengue-like film on the side of my tasting glass (from the 1st ever Gitchee Gumi fest, heh heh) and makes me think of dessert. A smokey, tannic dessert beer? Sure, why not. Velvety-smooth with soft carbonation on the first sip, but with a nice hop bite and significant bitterness braced-up against the malt complexity. Notes of green apple in the aromatics, along with complex phenols and warming alcohol. A sipper, not a beer for easy quaffing or light cuisines . . . probably great with cigars. Definitely cellarable and worth stashing a bottle. While this certainly isn't a beer for everyong, it is a beer for me.

Found this on the shelf of a small beer store. I think it's an 08.

A: Light brown and a small head to go along with it.

I didn't get detailed notes on this one from the Goose Island Beer Academy tasting on October 28, 2009 but this didn't really impress compared to other offerings. It comes across as a solid Baltic style Porter, the barrel aging is minimal, deep chocolate malts and roastiness, but as a special offering it falls a bit short for my tastes. Underperforms most of the Tyranena offerings, my favorite for Imperial porters.

Undated bottle.

Pour is standard porter black with a 1 inch tan head on it. Nose is odd, almost chalky with sour aspects and oak, not at all what I was expecting. The barrel aging is clearly affecting the smell in a big way.

The flavour starts out oakey as well, exceptionally so, which is accompanied by bourbon, a slight alcohol warming, some sourness, and the vaguest hints of chocolate. Finish has hints of coffee and roasted malts. Quite a brew.

Mouthfeel is adequate, though not remarkable, Somewhat thin for the flavour, which tastes like it should be motor oil. A shade above average for the style though. Drinkability is good, easy to drink, and a unique, tasty beer at an affordable price.

The bottom line: I have become a bigger and bigger fan of Arcadia as time has gone by. While many of their standard brews (beyond Whitsun and Scotch Ale) are only so-so, the big beer series is almost across the board solid, and Shipwreck Porter is another example of that.

22 oz. bomber with a picture of a shipwreck. Hmmm...I wonder why that ship wrecked, they probably had to much of this stuff on board. It bours black with a brown head that sits low and creamy.

The aroma is all Whisky man, after it warms a bit the Whisky aroma starts to smell a little like maple syrup in the end.

The flavor is an abundance of whisky flavor with some roasted malt and chocolate flavor. The flavor is good but the whisky is a little bit too much. I think I am going to pick up a few bottles of this to let every thing mellow out a bit and then try it again, it seems like it would be good with some age on it.

The mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation.

The drinkability is o.k. but not great because the whisky flavor is so over the top. Try aging this and the drinkability could improve.
