This is my first encounter with this style of ale. It pours a handsome mahogany color with an overly abundant off white head(and I do mean Overly abundant). It leaves a silky lacing and nice legs. The aroma is boozy, reminds me more of scotch or bourbon than beer. Notes of wood and vanilla and peat abound. The mouth is sticky and very coating. One of the thicker beers I've tried. The flavor is complex embodying many of the notes of a well made whiskey. It is very sweet at first but gives way to a pleasant depth of flavor that is warming for the body, mouth, and soul. Very nice beer. Can't wait to try more of the style.

2010 Vintage enjoyed on 05/03/14 in a snifter

Appearance: Hazy, light caramel color. A one and a half finger head lingers for a few minutes after pouring. This looks like a barleywine/old ale style beer, that is for sure.

Smell: Caramel, chocolate, malty sweetness. I then get a dominant apple cider smell. There are a lot of sweet scents that have melded together.

Taste: My initial reaction is that this beer tastes like a caramel apple. The taste then goes into a leathery, oaky finish. The caramel and toffee notes meld well with a slight toasted bread note. Molasses rounds out the flavor.

This apple flavor was so unexpected, but I am loving it. The oak and molasses flavors linger for a while after a sip. As the beer warms up, I am met with a licorice flavor, along with some earthy and grassy notes.

Mouthfeel: Thin to medium-thin. The mouthfeel does not interfere or detract from this beer.

I thought I had purchased a more recent vintage, but was quite happy to find out that my bottle was 4 years old. I wish I could find a fresher bottle to see where this beer started. At this age, it has an unexpected apple flavor, which I assume is acetaldehyde. It works for this beer.

2008 vintage. 22oz. bomber into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a dense, creamy 2.5 finger light cream colored head with great retention. Beer is a cloudy brown mud. Lacing is thick and layered with excellent stick. Color is terrible but its otherwise nice.

Nose is caramel, raisin, brown sugar, molasses and other dark fruit. Enticing and pretty deep.

Opens caramel, brown sugar and molasses. Some raisin, anise and plum in the middle with a mellow booziness lingering in the background. Very sweet with a big dark fruit presence. Finishes brown sugar, caramel and slightly nutty. Sweet aftertaste. Pretty impressive.

Medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Warm but slightly thin in the mouth and goes down mellow with a clean finish and little aftertaste. A touch thin for the style.

The real letdown about this beer is that the body is too thin to carry the flavors. Nice complexity and the molasses., caramel and dark fruit all work really well together. Just wish it had a bit more body and booziness to carry this through. Still worth trying though.
