A clear deep copper color body with a two finger off white foamy head . Aroma is of sweet roasted barley and pumpkin pie , nice amount of cinnamon and other spices with just a hint of baked apple . Flavor is lightly sweet with some nice cinnamon , and nutmeg notes , a little brown bread . A light bitterness and citrus finish from the hops . Medium body , smooth mouthfeel . A good drinker for a style that is not my favorite .

I picked up a bottle of Arcadia's Jaw-Jacker last week for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. I've had this beer a few times, but for some reason I've never reviewed it and I thought it was time to give it a proper review, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label doesn't look that great, I liked the old one much better, the new one looks cheesy, I don't think it's too eye catching. It poured a hazy golden orange color that took on more of a an orange amber color when held to the light with half a fingers worth of off white head that quickly died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left just a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This wasn't a great looking beer, the color was nice, but the head, lacing and retention weren't good

S- The aroma starts off with higher amount of medium sweetness with a light pumpkin aroma being the first to show up, but it's quickly overpowered by the spices which seem to dominate the aroma and it's the cinnamon that for sure stands out the most. Up next I get a bready and light grainy aroma. This beer didn't have a great aroma, it was dominated by Cinnamon and it didn't let any other aspects shine through.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but lighter and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the pumpkin still being the first to show up, but it might be even lighter than it was in the aroma and it's quickly overpowered by the spices with the cinnamon still being dominating. Up next comes a watery and light grainy flavor. On the finish there's a higher amount of light bitterness with a weird cinnamon like aftertaste. This wasn't a good tasting beer, the cinnamon was too overpowering and there weren't any other nice flavors to back it up.

M- Fairly smooth, crisp, a little watery, on the lighter side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. This beer had a decent mouthfeel, but I wish it wasn't watery.

Overall I thought this wasn't a good beer and i thought that it was a poor example of a Pumpkin Ale, instead of letting the pumpkin shine it was dominated by the cinnamon and that didn't let through any nice supporting flavors. This beer didn't have good drinkability, it was fairly smooth, crisp, a little watery, not filling and the taste didn't do a good job at holding my attention, one is enough for me, I have no urge at all to drink another one in a row. What I like the most about this beer was the mouthfeel, it was the only aspect that wasn't below average. What I liked the least about this beer was taste, it just wasn't good and it didn't really have any redeeming aspects. I wouldn't buy this beer again, now i see why i haven't had it in a couple years. I wouldn't recommend this beer, it's just not a good example of the style. All in all I didn't like this beer, Arcadia is a good brewery, but this isn't a good beer and I don't understand why they choose to release this below average Pumpkin Ale every year. This is my least favorite beer from Arcadia and it's one of my least favorite Pumpkin Ales. Better luck next time guys, this one needs some major work.

It's time for so many pumpkin brews to pop up. Some are really great. This is not one of the great ones.

My bottle looks flat. The color is fine but there is almost no head. The aroma is a sharp spice.

The taste is mildly spicy but otherwise had little going on. The mouthfeel of this bottle is poor but the aftertaste and burp are pretty nice.

I don't want to try this again.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue IX:

Hmm, though they don't say it's a Pumpkin Ale, the allusion is there due to the pumpkin head on the label. After some investigation, we find there's no pumpkin in this beer. It's just spiced, like the label says. Misleading, but let's move on.

Orangey-amber in color and completely hazy due to loose sediment on the bottom of the bottle. Thin layer of lacing sticks around for a while. Obvious pumpkin pie spice aromas (cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg), but the allspice and nutmeg become borderline soapy due to overuse. Mild malt sweetness and a faint buttery tone in the nose as well. Good smoothness with a creamy medium body. Malt is a little bit toasty with a kiss of sweetness. Woody hop bitterness in the middle. Spices take over with more of an earthy allspice and nutmeg combo. Yeasty and a tad buttery with a juicy fruit flavor in the center. Flavors seem to fall apart toward the end with a bitty grain and lingering butter flavor in the semidry finish.

It's hard to get past the spicing here. Bringing in the buttery tone is where this beer loses it. A bit of a chore to drink, and the spicing alone just doesn't cut it for us. If you're going to attempt a Pumpkin Ale, do it right.

Pours a copper orange hue with an inch of off white head creamy head on top. Aromas of lightly grainy caramel malt and light pumpkin along with cinnamon and nutmeg as the prominent spices. Subtle hops in the background.

First sip is light caramel malt with some DMS and a touch of pumpkin meat. Spiciness follows with nutmeg and cinnamon leading the way again. A bit grainy overall. Finishes with a touch of herbal hops. Not bad.

Mouthfeel is medium and sorta prickly on the tongue, not much creaminess to be had here. Overall, it's a pretty tasty pumpkin ale but it doesn't stand out from the pack.

Poured into a pint glass, the beer was an amber color with virtually no head, even with an aggressive pour. Mostly clove in the nose, with some faint background spice, all of which warmed/burnt my nose. Vaguely spicy taste, tiny bit of hops at the end. An OK beer, but there are certainly better examples of the style.

Notes from 9/12/10

A - Pours a murky brown with no head.

S - Nice aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg dominate; also some sweet malts in the background.

T - Once again cinnamon dominates; beneath the cinnamon are cloves and nutmeg, a sweet slightly earthy bread malt and a faint nutty flavor.

M - Has a rich mouthfeel, but not heavy; the cinnamon really dries out the mouth on the finish.

D - I am certainly enjoying this beer, but I don't know if I would want more than one in a sitting; nice to have a beer with the pumpkin spices without the sweetness of many pumpkin beers.

Cloudy amber color with a thin head and very little lacing.

Bottle says spiced with allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon. Smells slightly of nutmeg, lemon, mostly like a wheat beer, not a pumpkin spiced beer.

Tastes a little spicey, maybe some cloves, no cinn. allspice or nutmeg though. Balanced with some hops showing in the middle.

It's not a bad beer, just not what I'd call a spiced ale.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.
Pours a very clear, medium amber, with a creamy bone head and lots of fine-grained carbonation bubbles.

One of those beers that smells really nice, but not entirely like something I'm eager to drink; great as a candle, however. The aroma is dominated by spices, as is the flavor. A solid malt base appears mid-taste, but essentially only spices remain in the aftertaste.
Borders on over-spiced, if notclearly over the top, but thankfully there's a nice mix of spices, with cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice all evident.

Feel: Medium+ body; medium but soft carbonation; odd mix of smooth and lightly astringent/harsh.

O: spicy seasonal choice.

Got this from a friend who got it up in Champaign, IL. Much obliged.

Pours a nice dark orange/copper color with a two-finger rocky white head. The sheeting has larger than average bubbles and doesn't stick around too long.

Smells great. A whole lot of spices, mostly nutmeg and brown sugar. There are also some light fruit notes.

I wish it tasted as good as it smelled. It tastes like an average amber with just the slightest spice and fruit notes. Mildly sweet without much bitterness.

Mouthfeel is alright. The carbonation is a bit much, but the thickness is pretty good.

Drinkability is alright as well. It goes down easily enough, but I think it's lacking as a good pumpkin beer.

Overall this certainly wasn't bad, but there are better pumpkin beers out there. Worth a shot if you're into pumpkin beers.

The color lies somewhere between copper and bronze, shades of orange and bronze melding together. A nearly white head is about one finger high and fades to 1/2 a finger thick. What remains never fades beyond that and leaves good lacing.
The aroma is variously spicy and pretty heavily so, but not so much that it's overpowering or overbearing. In fact, it's more of a beer that's hoppy with some spicing as well. Underneath some toasty and caramel malts notes blend. While I like the spices and they're not overdone, there ought to be something more to the pumpkin aspect.
The taste is essentially the same, as some spices season an otherwise balanced brew that is by no means reminiscent of IPA but surprisingly hoppy nonetheless. There's a woody note leading into the finish. Without the "Pumpkin" moniker, this is simply a good spiced beer. Again, though, I would like more pumpkin to my pumpkin beers than simply the spicing.
The body is medium, almost fuller, smooth with a crisp bite.
This is a good beer but could use more pumpkin. Maybe my bottle was tame, but spicing wasn't harsh.
