Style | ABV
English Porter |  7.20% ABV

Availability: Fall

Notes/Commercial Description:
This 18th Century-style Smoked Porter has subtle accent of peat-like Bamberg smoked malt, which is apparent in both the aroma and flavor. It is brewed with seven varieties of premium European malted barley, resulting in note of bittersweet chocolate and coffee that are counter-balanced by a long-sustaining finish of Goldings hops.

Bought this one for my daughter's birthday party -- tea party theme for the ladies, beer in the basement for men. I was looking for English beers, but the American micros were more affordable in this horrendous economy, and when I saw Sir Winston chomping that cigar and flashing me the victory, I couldn't turn this one away (though I did end up picking up some stuff from across the pond too). I'll buy anything with Churchill on the packaging. Pours a dark brown with hints of red through the body when held up to the light. Coffee-with-cream colored head that doesn't diminish quickly.

Pleasing, inviting aromas of French roast coffee with a boozy, caramely backbone.

Taste is drier than expected on the early intake -- almost a dry stout -- that gives way quickly to 75-percent cacao dark chocolate, the aforementioned dark-roasted coffee, caramel, toffee, French Silk ice cream and a finish of ripe fruits.

Nice, strong presence in the mouth. Good drinkability in front of a disaster of a football game on a cold day. At 7.20 ABV with a pronounced richness to boot, I'm not drinking this all afternoon if I have somewhere to go, but it's a real pleaser.

And I'm proud that yet another outstanding brewery has emerged from my home state (their English IPA kicks butt too). Now if we can just get Bell's to distribute in Massachusetts...

$ 2.09/12 oz bottle from Lager Mill
Undated bottle at 40 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma of roasted malt, smoke, hint of chocolate
Head large (5 cm), light brown, creamy, rapidly diminishing to I cm layer
Lacing fair to good – wide complete rings and narrow rings with stalactites
Body dark brown, clear
Flavor of slightly smoked malt, slightly sweet initially, but bitter ending has a long hang time. No alcohol, no diacetyl. Can’t tell if the bitterness is from hops of from roasted malt.
Palate medium, watery, lively carbonation

Not a bad example of a brown porter/London porter. I personally don’t care for the peat smokiness but otherwise not a bad beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with small, fluffy beige head and a lot of bubbles. Aroma is of toasted malt, dark fruit and coffee and cream. Body is full and tangy. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruit and earthy hops. Finish is long and bitter. Very nice porter.
