Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Mitchster on 06-05-2002

This 18th Century-style Smoked Porter has subtle accent of peat-like Bamberg smoked malt, which is apparent in both the aroma and flavor. It is brewed with seven varieties of premium European malted barley, resulting in note of bittersweet chocolate and coffee that are counter-balanced by a long-sustaining finish of Goldings hops.

Pours a clear deep brown with mahogany highlights and a half inch milk chocolate head that dissipates leaving no lace.

Aroma is chocolate, roast malt, peat...almost bacony.

Roast malt provides a strong backbone for the flavor profile, with phenolic smoke and bandaid flavors lingering throughout. Chocolate is fairly prominent, not sweet, and the finish is a bit bitter.

Body is moderate with a fairly low amount of carbonation and a somewhat astringent finish.

Overall, not your momma's porter. More reminiscent of a scottish ale with the strong smoke and peat flavors. A bit too phenolic for me.

Thanks go out to hoppymeal for this one.

Pours from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Black brew with dark maroon highlights. Light chocolate colored head of decent size with decent retention as well.

Terrific chocolate and coffee notes with some fruity hints as well. Seems to be more fruity than anything. Slightly alcoholic in the aroma as well. Perhaps raspberry coffee is the best way to describe the aroma of this elixir.

Taste is slightly bitter with coffee on the tongue. Fruits are a little subdued. Alcohol is more noticeable. Plums and raisins are prevalant. Some chalky flavors as well. Not bad.

A different porter. Sweeter and fruitier than other porters. Pretty dry on the finish and, again, chalky in the end as well.

A: Pours a thin, chocolaty amber brew with some fizzy carbonation. Head settles in to a small pad of tan colored bubbles.

S: Fresh coffee grounds, milk chocolate, roasted barley with only a hint of sourness.

T: Begins with a quality roastedness this mixes intriguingly well with a subtle sourness and strong lactose. Has some milk shake qualities to it, primarily in the texture and chocolate. As it sits on the palate, all the flavors begin to intensify with some butterscotch getting involved too. Finishes with some piney hops in the highs and a somber and clean roastedness around the back of the tongue.

M: Medium body with a soft and straightforward mouthfeel.

D: Enjoyable porter with a lot of flavor. Decent complexity and a sturdy quaffability.
