Arcadia Hop Rocket - the label doesn't indicate ABV or style, and the label notching is cryptic - you can't tell what G-3 means whether it was born in 2007 or 2009. Boo hiss.

This brew poured dark golden, cloudy, like ice tea. There wasn't much head but it showed a little lacing. The aroma was a knockout. Citrus (grapefruit)- yes, strong and good, WOW. Apricot flavor notes.

The taste first struck me as complex and delicious. Hope dominate, it was musky, sweet, seemingly well balanced (for a hophead). Alcohol presence was noticeable (later I discovered this is a DIPA? w/ 9.0% ABV?). The malt flavor? maybe a little bready, but mostly absent. Mouthfeel was crisp, bubbly, light- to medium-bodies, some alcohol burn.

Overall this came across very well. While the malt flavors get seriously slighted, the hops part of the brew is stellar. I enjoyed this brew w/ my lunch, it was good to start, but by the end the heavy alcohol presence got old. One is enough of these, but it gives a nice buzz and it's tasty. Can't ask for much more.

Pours a cloudy orange color with slight yellowish off white head and plenty of lace. Aroma of pine, herb and grapefruit. In the taste, grapefruit, resin, sap and a sweet caramel like malt. A bit of alcohol is noticed. Medium bodied, well carbonated brew. Overall, a solid double ipa that gets the job done.

Arcadia hit the nail on the head with this one. I ordered a pint of this beer at the local tavern, and asked for a second. The color was light and clear with about a finger and a half of head . . . and then a taste . . . and POW!!! Hop Rocket lit up my taste buds like no other Arcadia beer has before. I will be looking for this one in the bottle. Cheers!

A: Pours a brilliant, hazy golden amber with a very thin, quickly dissipating white mousse.

S: Aromas of caramel, biscuit, sweet cream, grass, fresh herbs, kumquats, lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, spruce, and pine mingle with a hint of peppery alcohol.

T: Incredibly strong notes of caramel, toffee, sweet cream, brown sugar, biscuit, honey, grass, fresh herbs, kumquats, lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, spruce, pine, and cedar give way to an astringent, prickly hit of alcohol that imparts a brief sensation of white pepper. The finish is peppery and bitter with alcohol, white pepper, spruce, pine, cedar, lemon, grapefruit, and caramel flavors vying for dominance.

M: Full in body and initially slick, though a sticky, resinous sensation establishes a firm grasp on the palate by the fade. Carbonation is a little too sluggish and too unobtrusive compared to some of the higher rated DIPAs currently on the market. Alcohol presence is very intense. This is definitely a sipping beer, and taken in that context it is fine, but the oddly lacking carbonation is a bit of a concern for me. Perhaps there is something wrong with this bottle.

O: I was looking forward to trying a DIPA that put the Summit hop varietal on display, as it is one of my favorite varietals, and since many of the brewers and beer geeks I have spoken with tend to view it as the hop one uses when one cannot procure Simcoe, I wanted to see how it fared in a big beer more or less on its own. This beer is not bad, and I do admit that I am probably being rather harsh as my expectations were high, but it never really pulls everything together no matter how hard it tries. Still, this is far from a bad DIPA-it is just that there are far better examples of the style on the market that are readily available year round. The next time I see this, though, I am buying another bottle just to see if there is something a little off about this one.
