Bottled poured into a pint glass on 9/1/12.

Appearance: Very dark brown, almost black with minimal head that is off white in color.

Smell: Pretty bold dark roasted malts and a touch of vanilla. Can't get a hold on the hops.

Taste: Dark roasted malts, burnt brown sugar, and a moderately earth hop bit and booze heat as it finishes.

Mouthfeel: Moderate to full-body, low carbonation and noticeable alcohol warmth.

Overall: Fairly straightforward, not overly hoppy black IPA.

A - Pitch black with some mocha head and some spotty lacing.

S - Fruity, malty, faint hops, cherries.

T - Malt forward, chocolate, warming alcohol, raisins, cherries, finishes with a snap of hops. Dry aftertaste.

O - Heavy hitting Black IPA - a nice offering from Arcadia.

Pours a black color. One inch head of an off-tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of hop oils, slight floral hops, pine, slight roasted malt, and a hint of sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Black Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight roasted malt, hint of floral hops, hop oils, citrus hops, and hint of sweet malt. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, and body. The blend and complexity are a little lacking.

A heavy pour delivered a finger of tan head over a deep brown body. Lacing can't quite hold on to the sides.

Mmm-mmm, this smells good. Grapefruit and pine start off the aroma, and its quickly followed up with brown sugar and passionfruit.

The hops on the flavor here are very mixed. I get grassy, orangey, grapefruit and pine. Conglomeration actually doesn't seem to go as well as I would expect, but it's still good. Brown sugar, light crackers and caramel finish off the end with just a hint of bakers chocolate and passionfruit.

Good carbonation bite, medium body. A little sticky on the back of the tongue, definitely dry.

Arcadia misguidedly labels this beer a Double IPA despite that it uses enough dark malts to virtually turn it opaque. Though relatively light for an American Black Ales, it's black nonetheless. Heck, even its head isn't entirely white; the surface is encircled by a dirt brown foam.

The aroma has the desired coffee-and-cream sweetness and is blended with leaves and herbals, but it's all a bit sapless (pun intended) by my tastes - there isn't the resinous pine notes that I (and most hopheads) fiend for. I've come to expect my Black IPAs to smell like a tree that's been dissected into two... whereas this merely smells like I'm in a treehouse.

The taste, fortunate for me, offers a more vivid glimpse of the hops; spruce and pine grow in stature but not as much as the citrus notes; the flavour is like a strongly-steeped black tea blended with lemon myrtle. It is earthy, bitter, herbaceous and lightly, faintly tropical. There's also a flash of coffee on the finish that provides a juxtaposing kind of flavour...

And texture! This modest and subdued beer proves to have a fairly roasty aftertaste, however short-lived; the impression of burnt grain comes built-in to the finish but, for all its pent-up bitterness and roast, little interferes with drinkability. Ditto the 8.5% alcohol. At 85 IBUs this has a kind of profile that could appease both hop-heads and stout or porter fans.

For a well-hopped beer that is almost 9% and contains a good amount dark malts, B-Craft Black is surprisingly approachable to just about anyone. Sure, some will react by spitting and running as far as possible from this considerably bitter, comparatively bold offering but, on the whole, it's an ale that marries dark malt and bright hoppy flavours in a mild and engaging fashion. Good stuff.

Pours dark with some prune-brown tones. Small lip of foam became a ring pretty quickly.

Mellow earthy nose with a languid hoppiness and smooth maltiness in the balance. Lightly fruity. Not particularly roasty.

Spicy pine and woodiness, blanched by stewy roast malts and notes of unsweetened chocolate. Bit of a boozy sting. Almost rosy. Finishing bitterness gets a little intense. Dominated by grain and earth. Not dirty, but a little woody. Hints of dark fruits or berries. Almost port-like in the finish, only super-dry.

Smooth and a little oily. Biting carbonation toward the end punctuated by the bitterness. Alcohol turns out to be a whole lot sneakier.

Pretty good black ale. A DIPA is a bit of a stretch. Still enjoyable.

eyes...
audible head starts with loud fizzle and then settles down, off white head hovers around that for some time (ie good retention), lacing is good, black in appearance but not a pit of unearthly blackness, upon close inspection you can catch the streams of suds rising up to the surface, pretty nice looking

nose...
on first pop the hops dominate, but after this settles for a minute you get some nice roasted malt tones, not a dark roast, somewhere residing in the medium range with whisps of faint smoke, some of the juicy nature of the hops is always lurking in the background, a nice balance

taste etc...
immediate bitterness that melds into some sweetness and then lingers in roast tones, all are sort of mid range and not strong or competing, medium in the mouth with sort of underwhelming carbonation, the further you go on in the glass the roast tones become slightly more pronounced, the ABV taps you on the shoulder but is pretty well in the back for the most part (kudos), in the medium zone weight wise (just right)

verdict?
a tasty version with some kick, better executed than many black IPAs but lacks the deep roast or top hops of the best, a very good beer though. definitely grab one if you see it, well rounded!

12 oz. bottle poured into a Kuhnhenn snifter.

Appearance - Pours a dark brown, not quite black body with only a touch of a head. The faintest of collars around a translucent edge at the surface.

Smell - Some musty pine hops, but it isn't hop dominant. The hops are well balanced by a chocolate and caramel malt.

Taste - Pine hops throughout, which is nice. The chocolate is consistent with just a hint of sweetness shining through. It gets more bitter throughout without ever getting heavy on the malts.

Mouthfeel - Like a light, overhopped RIS. Never too sweet. Never too bitter. Nicely balanced without being a hop bomb of a black IPA.

Overall - I usually like hoppier black IPAs, but this is quite nice. There is a strange aftertaste that is there and gone in an instant. So brief I can't really identify it, so I won't peg it back for it.
