Wow, this very dark red ale has a big malt aroma! I pour the beer into my glass and it burst with a malt aroma laced with toffee, peatiness and leather. The taste is wonderfully complex, with all the maltiness that one would expect in a Scotch Ale combined with a huge toffee-caramel character along with a slightly chewy date-like fruitiness. All of these flavors are wrapped up nicely towards the finish, which a wine-like fruity and spicy finish that is very pleasant with just the right amount hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is luxurious and smooth, with just the right amount of carbonation that enhances the appearance, leaving a persistent collar of foam down to the last sip. Perhaps this is a little more estery than "real" Scotch Ale (from Scotland) and maybe a touch "husky" in the finish as it warms up (that last sip), but it's delicious nonetheless.

This is really an outstanding beer.

A: Dark brown with a slight strawberry tinge when held to the light. 2 fingers of light beige head, no apparent cloud or carbonation.

S: Toffee, coffee, peat, heather, earthy, film developing fluid, slight rubbing alcohol.

T: Toffee, banana, light sweetness, rubbing alcohol, earthy, peat, clean linen. Some corn, light bitterness, coffee.

M: Thick, syrupy body, medium carbonation.

O: Well done. Reminds me of Skull Splitter, but a little less rounded or refined. Still, very well done.

This scotch ale pours a dark mahogany color with a generous off-white head that quickly gives way to a nice film and lacing. The aroma is very malty with hints of vanilla, alcohol, caramel, peat and a little yeast. The mouth is pleasantly thick and sticky. The flavor is malty but not overly sweet. It is a balanced blend of booze and earth. Not the best scotch ale I've had but not bad at all.
