Bottle from Wasana's. Sour smelling weizen. Appearance is lacking, as head dissipates almost instantly. Taste is also off. An embarrassment to Bavaria. Would like to sample this again, possible infected bottle.

(500 ml bottle, best before 26.08.16 - poured into a wine glass - had a weizen glass, but

L: golden-yellow liquid with a moderate cloudiness... off-white foam, dense but loose, piles moderately high, but doesn't hold up well, which is a concern... there is a slug of sediment in the bottom of the bottle and, when poured in to fill the glass, gets things truly murky

S: mashed bananas, bread dough, and a hint of fresh cut grass and sweaty yeast... floral overtone... lovely, moderate-high intensity... no oxidation, smells relatively fresh... fresh-baked banana bread that wasn't darkened too much in the oven, that and the grassy highlights are

T: spicy center that's more plum than clove... banana flavor is somewhat bold, with some true tones of bubblegum filling out around the sides, then lingering and looming large in the aftertaste... the doughy malt is an afterthought at first... long into the aftertaste, crust of white sandwich loaf, maybe a nip metallic

F: plush, lightly sticky... relatively thick, but it fans out wonderfully, dissolving softly at the back of the palate - barely even feel it going down the gullet... really, its sequence in texture is exquisite and the one element in which it out matches Weihenstephaner

O: can't say I've come across many that top this (perhaps it's its freshness?) - top 5 for me, for sure... the taste is explosive, layered, and high volume throughout... I would like another, but I only had one bottle

Fürst Wallerstein Hefe-Weizen
.5 L brown bottle with swing-top enclosure. "Best before 19.02.14" - almost 6 months old...
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Appearance: Typical. Clearer than it might be. Heavy sediment is left in the base of the bottle. Good head retention, dropping but always maintaining a solid surface covering. Average lacing.

Smell: Wheat. Minor banana and clove. Dull, probably due to age.

Taste: As the nose indicates, the flavor follows. It's nicely balanced with a bitterness that just pushes slightly past the malt sweetness. Gently spicy and floral hops accentuate. Pleasant maltiness and moderate yeastiness. Round and smooth. Some plastic-like and minor smoky phenolics give it a bit of an edge... it reminds me of slow-roasted pork in a way. Lots of vanilla in the lingering finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium headed towards medium in body. Gently crisp, effervescent carbonation.

Overall: A fresh sample would, without question, be worth trying. The spicy and gently phenolic combination followed by soft vanilla allows it to stand out from the pack.
