I had this on draft 11/16/23 @ Laschet's Inn.

Mostly opaque dark orange appearance.

Big khaki head nice lacing remained.

Raw wheat & lemon notes in the nose.

Creamy, medium mouthfeel.

Fresh corn, raw wheat & mild lemon flavors.

Enjoyable mouthfeel & a solid taste. Well done.

From the new style 12 oz German bottle, it pours a hazy amber with a modest white head that soon diminishes to a thin layer. In the nose, it is nicely bready with a touch of hops. in the mouth, it is a tad yeasty, with a nice hop bite and malt base. I like it!

Note: mine says 4.9% alcohol

(500 ml flip-top bottle, best before 26.08.16 - poured into a large wine glass)

L: medium amber-colored liquid, very hazy, bordering on cloudy... 2 finger tall, off-white foam stand - rocky and sticking to the sides of the glass while receding... a wide band or two of crystalline lace

S: toasted oats (granola cereal), touch of honey, dry grassy field... graham cracker without cinnamon, hint of dry brewer's yeast... maybe some citrus highlights from the hops, but not 'hoppy'... the grainy-bready aromas have depth and dark golden color... overall intensity softly beckons attention

T: thick, layered maltiness... dried grass and flower on the edges... could use a mildly fruitier counterbalance from the hops - some of my favorite beers in this style have a bright lemon and/or grapefruit tone... hop flavor is rather neutral and its bitterness is mild-moderate... earth (dirt) in the finish and perhaps a tiny hint of spice in the aftertaste... the malt flavor is superb, it just needs a little more zazz from the hops

F: medium-bodied with an almost powdery/silky texture... quite smooth... threatens to be filling as it settles across the palate, but it fades as it drains back... truly liquid bread - like a doppelbock, but without a strong presence of alcohol

O: so glad their beers have become available in my area, and relatively fresh too!... I've had 4 brands twice each now, and I very much enjoyed all of them... EDIT: just saw 'apricot' in another review - yes! I could taste a hint of that (still have a few sips left)

500 ml bottle, best before 8/26/2016.

My first Kellerbier/Zwickel! Deep gold to light amber in color and cloudy, but I can see shadows of my fingers on the other side of the glass when held up to the light. Creamy, off-white head that is large at first, but quickly dissipates and shows some mild retention.

Initially, you get the malt and the hops in the aroma. Toasted malts and bread combined with spicy hops. The flavor is rich without being too sweet. Bitterness from the hops does a good job of providing balance. Almost like mixing the richness of a Helles lager with the sharp bite of a pilsner. There is a slight hefeweizen quality to it, as the yeast is fairly prominent, but lacking the banana/clove character of a hefe.

The best part has to be how creamy and smooth it is. The creamy texture brings all of the flavors together and creates a softness that makes it dangerously easy to drink.

Worthy of a try for sure. I can't imagine how enjoyable this must be served on-tap fresh at a tavern or biergarten in Germany.

Fürst Wallerstein Zwickel
500 ml swing-top brown glass bottle, "Best Before 09.07.14 09:39 CE NR 190"... sampled on 08/09/14 (not exactly fresh, but not oxidized)
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

The word zwickel refers to the sample port on a brewing vessel, and it's not common for brewers to open it up and enjoy a glass of unfiltered beer straight from the tank.

Zwickelbier is one of my favorite styles as it's fresh and bright, and generally not as carbonated as the final product would be - unless, of course, they're making zwickel beer itself for packaging. It still has the yeast in it, although it's generally cleared quite a bit as the yeast has sedimented, and that yeast both lends a bit of flavor itself, but also softens the rest of the beer (meaning that a hoppy Pilsner won't seem quite as sharp and bitter as it would had it been filtered).

This is a good example of the style with a soft, basic Pilsner malt base and moderate floral and spicy hops. I just wish I had had a fresher sample to enjoy.

This is a really nice example of the style- lots of doughy and bready malt, for sure, but it also lets the hops show through, so it's got a little zip in its step. The mid-palate is where the malt and spicy hops give way to a gentle and tasty orange marmalade fruitiness, before giving way to a touch of grassy hops and yeasty finish. Impeccable balance and harmony of flavors, too. I can't say I've had very many Zwickels, but this is by far the best of the lot- go out and get some now!
