On tap at Stone 15th Anniversary party

Look: Copper in color with traces of brown throughout that deepen the color of the copper. Very little head in any

Smell: Very strong caramel malt presence with traces of oak and vanilla

Taste: Same as the nose. The caramel malt is very prevalent and almost overpowering due to the sweetness. As the beer warms the oak and vanilla come to the foreground but only in traces

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium to low carbonation

Overall: I am a little disappointed with this beer due to the fact that I did not pick up any Whisky whatsoever. Apart from that very good beer highly recommended

On-tap at Tustin

Murky brownish amber color with minimal head. Tons of whiskey notes, great rye, oak, and vanilla. A touch of booze, brown sugar, maple syrup, and toffee. Really nice nose. The flavor is rich, boozy, and sweet. A hint of chocolate, lots of maple syrup and brown sugar, and mild dark fruits. Tons of barrel, lots of rye, vanilla, and oak. Not sure which is better, this or the bourbon barrel.

Bottle. 2009 vintage aged for 14 months in rye whiskey barrels.

A: Very dark brown with a small beige crown. Modest alcohol collar with a swirl of the glass.

S: Wow. Big vanilla, toffee, caramel, and chocolate notes meet a huge rye whiskey presence. Brown sugar is pervasive. Earth is evident throughout and I get a little oak. The aroma is stunning. The barrel character is really strong and it blends seamlessly with the rich malt characteristics. Faint notes of dried dark fruits are evident and I get a touch of treacle.

T: Caramel, brown sugar, treacle, dark toffee, and strong vanilla notes. Light oak presence with a pronounced rye whiskey profile. Light notes of date and plum. Low earthy bitterness. The rich finish is smooth with a touch of alcohol and a final flourish of all the aforementioned barrel and malt characteristics.

M: Upper medium body with an upper low level of carbonation. Mouthfeel is smooth, silky, and sticky, with some alcohol warming.

Overall: In a string of days filled with world class beers this stood out to me as the best of the bunch. This is about as good as it gets for the style. I loved the bourbon barrel aged version of this when I tried it at Pizza Port Barrel Blast in 2011, but this rye whiskey version is a step above that. I'm looking forward to revisiting this in the near future and seeing if it impresses me then like it did on this day.
