Stopped in here on a beautiful day sightseeing in Bern.

This place has the best location, right outside on the outside of the old-town next to the bears and scenic walkway leading up to the old town. Beautiful porch overlooks the old town and the river, also has a warm and very large indoor area with family style seating long tables. Nice bar area as you walk in and then a nice big open seating area with large panoramic windows all around.

The menu was typical swiss beer hall food consisting of rosti, spatzel , burgers, soups, salads and some german/swiss sausage platters. We had the rosti and the spatzel which went great with the beer sampler i had. For 14 francs you get 4x 2cl pours which really are more like .25cl as they are generous with their pours. I had the helles, marzen, weissbier and the saisonbier which i think was a pilsener. Weiss bier was my favorite of the bunch, but all well crafted brews. The service is typical european service so that goes to average as they do not work for tips so getting their attention is a job in itself. Selection was about average for me as most places brew 3 beers and a seasonal. I only rated this just above as you can part with one of their glasses from between 4 to 6 francs which i thought was nice.

Overall this place is a must stop even if you aren't into beer because of the location and the view. IF you are into beer this place is the best place in town to grab some quality brewed beers and eat some great food. Prices were much better than I anticipated. about $20 for the rosti or spatzel and main courses range from 20 to 40 francs a plate. Highly recommended

Beautiful place on the hillside across the river from old town. Sat on the terrace with views across the water to the old city on a beautiful sunny day, could not be better.

Ordered the Spatzli with vegetables and the Hash browns with onions au gratin topped with a fried egg, both were awesome. Nice children's menu so the little one had a nice lunch as well.

Waitress was pleasant and spoke average but passable English. Overall the service was as to be expected and fine.

Drank the Tram-Helles and the Tram-Weizen, both were delicious and much enjoyed.

If you walk to the restrooms downstairs you walk past a glass wall showing the brewery. Worth checking out.

Loved this place, beers were delicious as were the meals and the view was great.

Stopped at this place this past summer just for a quick refreshing beer, but couldn't stay very long. Outside walking up to this joint there are these bear pits, since bears are the symbol for the city of Bern, so I thought that was pretty sweet...just didn't want to fall into one! Anywho this place only had three offerings: a lager I don't remember, a Marzen, and a weizen. I only had time to try the Marzen, and it was actually my first time trying the style and it was very good. I really enjoyed the beer and the people there were pretty nice, even though we were a sorta big group of Americans. When you head to the bathrooms downstairs you get to pass by the brewing facilities, it seems a bit cramped to work down there, but was still cool to look at. Overall this was a decent place to go and would definitely love to get some more of their Marzen bier!

Thanks to the recommendation of a swiss italian friend of mine we came for lunch on our one-day visit to Bern all the way accross the river and past the old town to this location, a bit far but worthwhile anyway.

The first thing you'd see is the Tourist Office signs, of course, by a pit with a few bears inside it (the animal is the symbol of the city). You'll think this is a total tourist gimmick, but you're wrong.
Inside the place offers indoors seating with a germanic-style modern architecture with a bar setting- where the fermentation tanks are located- and seating for proper meals rather a bit further back. not many people when we went there so it was better to look outside.
This was a brilliant idea, because you feel directly in the middle of a bayerische biergarten- the trees and the rays of light passing through their leaves, the tables set up in lines- and the nice looking waitresses. the view is also spectacular, because it oversees the river's valley from a high ground and all the way on the other side, the altstadt.

The service was not spectacular but that's probably because we got the lousy waiter, who forgot our orders and wasn't all to keen on his english or french skills, so to further confuse the guy I pitched a few lines in dutch.

Their selection is well limited but, considering where we're at (CH), their 4 or 5 beer choices was not a bad selection. I went d'abord for the 3 beer assortment, which included a Helles, a Marzen and a Weizen, all of which were actually quite good. There's meant to be some seasonal beers (bocks among others), unavailable the day I went.

Worth mentioning is the quality of their foods. I had the Spatzli with bacon and thereon a weisswurst, both of which were very very tasty typical meals of this area. for dessert, the Kaiserschmarren was not spectacular but this was due to the silly waiter who forgot the order and then burned a little. but hey, can't win them all.

Overall I'd say pricing is quite reasonable. This is supposed to be a 'tourist trap' but turns out to have large meals and good beers well within the most reasonable pricing. If ever in Bern (hey, you never know), might as well give this place a chance.

The Altes Tramdepot is located in the same building as the tourist office, right next to the bear pits that are Bern's prime tourist attraction, and just across the river from the old town. The view from the beer garden is spectacular. Therefore, the place gets a lot of tourists who neither know nor care that they are in a brewpub. The Tramdepot offers three standard brews year round: a lager, a Märzen and a wheat beer. They also usually have a seasonal, the best of which is probably their Maibock. All of their brews are solid, but unspectacular. The service is bad, but the food is generally good.
