Real ale version of this beer. 12 oz can.

1 finger of creamy tan head. Color is black. Lots of lace left.

Flavor profile: A lot of caramel malts and chocolate. Hop resiny juiciness. Grapefruit and orange. Dark fruits. Molasses. Raisins. Piney hops.

Mouthfeel: Sticky, bitter, roasted. Medium bodied. Good carbonation. Ends fairly clean.

Overall, very similar, if not identical to the surly version. Hoppy, lightly roasted, and dark.

From the 12 ounce can into a teku.

A- Big, frothy, dark-khaki-colored head with large carbonation bubbles. Body is pitchblack and thus obviously opaque. The head is very persistent and leaves streaks of lace everywhere.

S- Spicy hops and a rye-like aroma. Dark roasted malts and a hint of dark chocolate are just beneath the heavier hop aromas. Something like burnt toast is present too.

T- A thick, deep coffee and dark chocolate flavor stand out up front. A combination of piney hops and orange juice citrus then work their way into the picture. There are many dimensions to this flavor, as I'm getting some sweet malt and caramel and a flavor that reminds me of an orange chocolate cordial. A burnt caramel flavor melds with the citrus on the finish and sits there.

M-Has a slightly spicy feel to it. Medium-body. Some sweetness and grapefruit rind bitterness that lingers. Light to mid carbonation, but drinks with a heavy viscosity.

This is a damn good Black IPA. Right up there with the best in style.

Wow, thanks to Ben for extraing me this.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a nice head.

At about 3 months old, the aroma is dominated by anise and dark cocoa. Very little hop aroma coming through.

Taste is also dominated by the bitter cocoa and anise. A nice hop bitterness kicks in on the midpalate and carries through the finish. The flavors really work well together.

Mouthfeel is great, thick and chewy.

Overall, this was a great surprise. Tastes like a very hoppy imperial stout rather than a double black IPA. Actually reminds me of Founders Imperial Stout. I'd love for this to become a recurring seasonal.
