Big thanks go out to my man Daniel (stopbarking) for this one out of a box of real gems.
Pours a clear dark ruby brown with a light tan head that retains very well leaving nice lacing.
Nose is weaker than i expected on the coffee front, its in there, but roasted malt makes its presence known first.
Hmmm. Definitely not the coffee bomb i was expecting, but aside from that, this is an excellent porter! Great roasted malt profile with an excellent creamy presence through the middle. The finish is nice and sharp without being too bitter or chalky, and great roasted malt lingers in the aftertaste. The coffee is definitely used as an accent here (think coconut in coconut porter) rather than a focal point of the brew. There's something to be said for subtelty and i like the way this is done. I like coffee bombs too, but this is an excellent porter aside from any adjuncts.
Mouthfeel is a touch thin, but not bad. Carbonation is dead on, and i like the mouthfeel on the finish.
Drinkability is quite solid. Could probably put away a sixer of these with ease. Another advantage of it not being a total coffee bomb.
Overall, this is an excellent beer. The coffee is a nice accent rather than a dominant face raping java joust. Which will be somewhat offputting for those looking for a cup o joe breakfast beer, but if you stop and think about the fact that this is a coffee PORTER, and that there is something to be said for the subtle end of the spectrum, you will realize that this is a very nice porter. Recommended.
