Best by date is 030710. Poured into SA turbulator glass. Color is dark brown leather belt with hints of ruby. Smallish head with minimal lacing; oily film sticks to glass.
Aroma is dark toasted malt and dark roasted coffee. Somewhat creamy smell with vanilla and fruitcake hops. A nip of pine and a dash of apricot.
Toasty malt dances with coffee; the coffee is not overpowering and finishes well with a nice helping of piney hops. A very crisp beer and very balanced throughout the tasting; nothing dominates. The carbonation creates a crisp and tart mouthfeel and is left with a dry, mild coffee after taste.
Very easy to drink and would recommend to a porter newbie. As mentioned the beer is precisely balanced which in my opinion makes it very enjoyable. Great for starting out the night or a nightcap; would pair well with some pastries. Another reason to visit Austin, Katz and Real Ale; thanks to my sis-in-law for bringing it north.
