A - Beautiful chocolate brown, carbonated; tan head that retains well. Reddish edges as the light shines through the glass.
S - Smells of candied fruits, figs; sweet like ripe bananas. Faint whiffs of bagels and biscuits, malts.
T - Strong, sour alcohol notes right up front. Huge, malty sweetness that's evenly tempered by the alcohol. Big aftertaste of sourdough and pumpernickel, dark brown breads. Still, the sourness of the alcohol dominates above all, a bit surprising since it's not a highly alcoholic beer. Pleasant, not overwhelming but still surprising.
M - Very good. Smooth, even across the palate, enjoyable. Burns the tongue a bit on the first splash, but that's okay too.
Overall, a decent effort by Real Ale, but not my favorite from them. If you're ever in South Texas, I recommend Real Ale's Full Moon Pale Rye Ale, and this would make a decent, maltier companion.
