I tried this on my last trip to Houston. It came as part of a Real Ale sampler pack that I found at a local liquor store there called Spec's. $8.41 for a six pack. Very disappointed to discover all the beers were past their "best before" date. This one has an August 2012 pull date and this is already September of 2012, so it won't be at its freshest.

The beer poured a dark brown, slightly hazed color with ruby red highlights when held to light. I only got a thin beige rim for a head that lasted less than 30 seconds and left very little lacing. I thought this might be due to it being past its freshness date, but after reading other reviews I see no one got much of a head out of this beer.

Smells nutty with some caramel, chocolate, and coffee in it.

Nice chocolate/coffee flavor. More dry than sweet with a slight hop twang in the background.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

A decent brown ale, although I would have preferred a more nutty taste which would have kept it more true to style.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

A - Beer appears a deep, opaque brown, but shows as a slightly hazy mahogany when held up to light. Head is off-white and low, but stays as a thin sheet.

S - Aroma is very malty--bread, brown sugar and lightly nutty. No hops or alcohol on the nose. Aroma is not overly complex, but is very clean.

T - Clean, bready malt dominates. Some brown sugar and perhaps a touch of raisins. No roasted note. Hops are earthy and only appear very faintly in the background. Slight sweetness in the finish, but over all very clean, crisp flavors.

M - Medium body. Light hops bitterness. Low carbonation. No alcohol burn. All appropriate for style.

O - This is a substantial, thick and malty brown ale in the English style. It is very close to a porter in many ways, which is just fine by me. Extremely clean and well-made. I highly recommend it.

Medium sized light tan head sits above a clear dark brown colored ale.

A faint sweet lightly roasted nut aroma coming off this beer.

Light chocolate malts with a creamy smooth taste.

A very light dryish aftertaste without much tastes lingering behind with this medium bodied brown.

This beer seems like the halfway point between Bud and Guinness, not sure if that's a compliment or not.
