From notes 12/02/10. Sampled the 2009 Devil's share on tap at the Dancing Bear in Waco. Served in an Allagash tulip. Half-pint for $6.

A- Cloudy, golden/peach in color, 1/2cm of wisp-like head, fine bubbles.

S- Orange, yeast, faint bubblegum, alcohol smell is present as it warms, faint pepper as well.

T/M- Similar to a chardonnay, smooth, velvelty, rich for a medium bodied beer.

D- It is very interesting and entertaining. It seemed like there wasn't enough going on with the taste for what I smelled. I was expecting something a little bit more robust. IfIi ever see it again, I would get a glass due to the fact that it is so rare.

Sampled on tap at the Freetail-Real Ale barrel-aged festival in San Antonio.

The beer pours a golden color with a white head. The aroma is very nice with notes of Belgian yeast, lemons, orange and oak. The flavor is very similar. The oranges and lemons mix very well with the sugar, alcohol, yeast, oak and spices. Everything blends well and makes this my favorite of the four barrel-aged Real Ale beers that were at the festival. Creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Look - hazy yellow
Smell - fruity, boozy
Taste - great triple taste. The red wine barrel aging can be tasted at the end.
Feel - typical

Honestly one of the best Tripels I have had. Better than La Fin Du Monde and Tripel Karmaliet.

A spicy version of Devil's Backbone. I dig the aroma (wine notes, bit of vanilla), golden but darker than the base beer. Would be interesting to have this on a more regular basis to get a better review compared to DB. Medium to long finish. Worth trying if you find it on tap somewhere.

Oaked Devil's Backbone, on tap at Gingerman Dallas.

Seriously oaky! Very American oak on top of Devils Backbone. Very tasty, very drinkable. Softly sour/tart, moderately malty, smooth and quite soft/well-aged. Soft notions of alcohol. Soft grape-like notions. Well balanced. Soft oaky finish over the typical yet mellowed Devils Backbone.

Quite nice and a must try for the Oak-Head.

Kudos.

On tap at the Gingerman in Houston.

A: Pours a beautiful bright golden/orange color with a bit of haze. A two finger tightly packed white head forms with excellent retention. Plenty of sticky lace is left behind.
S: Up front is a big oak and vanilla aroma that is great. That quickly fades to some fruity esters of banana, citrus, and lemon. Some Belgian yeast. A soft tartness lingers as well. Lots of layers that is incredibly nuanced and well incorporated.
T: Follows the nose. Plenty of vanilla sweetness and oak up front. A bit more of a fruity ester flavor than the nose however. Some banana and a bit of spice. Though more citrus and lemon flavors come out. A bit more tartness as well. It all melds incredibly well together.
M/D: A full body that is incredibly smooth and creamy. It is very decadent, but I wish it was a bit more crisp and dry than it is. A small flaw that is easily looked over. So easy and smooth to drink. A really nice sipper, but one that I wish would never end.

This is just an amazing barrel aged Tripel. Any lovers of Allagash Curieux will love this as well. I think this beats Curieux personally, but would be great to try them side by side. An awesome beer that is one of the best one-offs made in Texas. Highly recommended.
