On tap at Rudyard's.

A: Pours a clear yellow/orange color. No head what so ever forms, and obviously no lace. Looks fairly lifeless.
S: Lots of sweetness in the nose, but also plenty of hops. Slightly sour, and rotten fruity aroma as well. Over ripe pears and apples.
T: Follows the nose with lots of sweetness up front. Hops are noticeable with a strong grapefruit flavor. Over ripe/moldy fruit as well. Lots of alcohol.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. Lots of alcohol. This is hard to sip on.

I love Real Ale, but not a fan of this. I understand why I did not like the barrel aged version of this now. I don't think this is a particularly well made beer.

From notes 09/02/10. Had on-tap at Dancing Bear Pub.

A- Burnt yellow, cloudy, one finger head, aggressive lacing.

S- Hops and lemon grass.

T/M- Creamy, whipped, light, mildly coarse, bubbly, smooth.

D- Excellent. It's a pale ale, but it tastes like a good IPA. Shame it's gone.

On tap at Whip In, 28 Aug 2010.

Served in an ~8 oz. tumbler. Small creamy white head. Medium carbonation. Cloudy dark yellow color. Aroma is floral, bready, some citrus. Starts resiny with some orange peel. Pineapple through the middle. Some caramel and yeastiness. Alcohol is quite warming. Lingering resiny finish. Medium to light body.

Alcohol feels like more than 8.5%.

on tap at "whip-in" in austin...

the site calls it a strong blonde ale. "whip in" called it a intensely dry hopped imperial IPA. look of yellow brass almost clear with a white head. nose of robust hop. quite dry, floral, and crisp. the palate on the other hand was much more mild then the nose precursor. pineapple sweet citrus with a nice consistent but not overly bitter finish. great feel. fantastic for indian food.

A - cloudy orange hue, with a very light head

S - almost too sour to the nose, the aroma of grapefruit combined with hops is the main characteristic.

T - the grapefruit nose whacks your taste buds with intensity. Too much for my palate. A light hoppiness in the back palate, but in the end, almost like drinking alcoholic grapefruit juice. Sorry, just not my cup of tea (or beer).

M - for beer with higher ABV, this is suprisingly easy on the palate. For me, just really hard to get over that sour grapefruit taste combined with the hoppiness. I'll be glad when this one is done.

D - would not order again if given the chance. Just too much bitter, sour, off color tastes for me. I've had A LOT better offerings from Real Ale, but this one really missed the mark for me.

reviewing from the bar, so it is minimal and to the point. Pours a nice golden color with very little head...
this beer has the most grapefruit on the nose than any other beer I have ever had. It is absolutely amazing. It really smells like grapefruit candy.
front is all grapefruit followed by a ton of sweet. The finish is actually very bitter... which is strange. this type of hop presence is typically not bitter, but very sweet.
Anyway, this beer gets you very very excited by the nose, and then actually disappoints. by the finish, this tastes like a crappy lager. Though the whole buildup is exciting and very nice. It is like a movie that has awesome trailers, is great during and has the most disappointing ending.

On tap at the Draught House in Austin.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus notes to go along with some yeast and alcohol. The flavor is orange, grapes, caramel malt, yeast and quite a bit of alcohol. The beer is fairly boozy. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On-tap at the Austin Flying Saucer.

XIV displays a hazy, goldenrod body that brightens to maize in the light. A well-retained tuft of sandstone head is supplied by a few tiny trains of carbonation from below. The aroma is both unique and memorable, with a cornucopia of fruitiness: pineapple, mango, strawberry, and starfruit. Vanilla and honey sweeten the bouquet, while the hops add a touch of light floralness.

Real Ale didn't shy on the flavor either, as XIV packs a big body full of blonde-ish malts and fruity booze. The hops taste grassy and resinous, but the highlight is the tropical fruits derived from the yeast...excellent stuff, even though it's not the most cohesive-tasting flavor profile. Body is of medium consistency, moderately crisp with carbonation yet boozy and a bit solventy on the finish with residual hop bitterness. A crafty Anniversary beer..complex, tasty, and original. Kudos, Real Ale. Keep 'em coming!
