2017 vintage, really interesting brew, pulled to toast a friend who will be working there soon. i love these little bottles, and this one has aged well. its almost more of an oud bruin or a flanders red now than a scotch ale to me, although i suppose i still get some european ale yeast here beneath the sharp bacterial and vinegar acidity this presents, i wonder if it was always this sour or if this is a phenomenon of the cellar. kind of looks like dark cognac in the glass after the head settles, some shine, some amber edges, some legs on the edges of the wine glass we drank it from. notes of pie cherry, raisin, raspberry vinegar, and baked bread in the nose, some booziness too, and just a bit of malt oxidation, smells complex, fancy, mature, heavily wooded, and with all the richness and fruity layers of expensive cabernet. its tannic and grapey in the taste, with light smoke, char, and funk to it, but for me this is sharply acidic, even acetic, and with all the alcohol, a small glass seems like plenty. its obviously long aged, and even with the acid it retains some smoothness and body from all the wood. its hard to appreciate this as a scotch ale for me, that moment has passed if it were ever more apparent in here, but i still like this a lot. port wine and berries to finish, barrel char, red apple, strong lactic acidity, and some residual sweetness. complex and tasty, real puckery. i like this series, and am always stoked when i have new beers from it (havent had nearly enough of them!) this was a fun and unique drink. good luck to my buddy!

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

Deep copper red body with nice clarity. Faint tan head dissolving to a simple thin collar.

Aroma has a nice sour cherry to red berry note. Very light touches of toffee angled caramel. Not much barrel character and hints a little thin.

Palate is a little awkward. Thin caramel body and flavour with mild touches of sour cherry. Tangy with mild berry notes but also a little medicine and lacking body.

Sort of an odd combination that doesn't seem to add much character, and lacks some barrel touches.

Had it on tap in a tall fluted glass. Decent head but minimal lacing. Smell was of tart fruits, grapes, cherries and apples. The grapes really followed into the taste. Dark wine notes along with berries and cherries. Enjoyed it.

Serving: 500 ml bottle (2017 vintage) poured into a 9 oz Libbey Embassy snifter.

Appearance: Hazy, brownish copper with a tidy head of off white foam and sticky, spotty lace.

Smell: Pleasantly integrated aroma of sour berries, oak barrels, tobacco, wet straw and wool blankets.

Taste: Terrificly tart with plenty of sour cherry and red wine vinegar. Just enough malt body, with hints of caramel and earthy hops from its Wee Heavy base.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, clean feel and crisply moderate carbonation.

Overall: Refreshingly tart and refreshing while retaining enough of its malty Scotch Ale base to remain complex and flavorful.
