On tap at Traverse City location.

L: Jet black, moderate tan head

S: Vanilla, roasted malt

T: Artificial vanilla flavor, strong alcohol flavor despite moderate ABV, coffee

F: Big drawback of this beer is the harsh, not smooth, mouthfeel. Appropriately carbonated.

O: Very disappointing attempt at an oatmeal stout. Scrap this one and try again.

From notes. On tap on location.
Poured black, with a slight tan head.
Aroma, roasted oats in the nose. Chocolates, though not too sweet.
Taste, Oily, slightly chewy, coffee and slight mocha. It was pretty bitter for a stout, much less a sweet stout. Good body, drank easy, but I did not want another. Really not bad, just not great.

A. A dark brown ruby red with a thin tan head that disappears quickly. Not much retention and some lacing to this beer.
S. The smell is slight hints of powdery chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Not much going here.
T. Do taste some caramel, hints of coffee and vanilla and some powdery bitter chocolate. Has a strong alcohol like aftertaste to it.
M. The mouthfeel is like a sticky syrup, not nice and creamy like other oatmeal stouts.
D. It goes down easily and was acceptable. This is not a great oatmeal stout, but not bad either. Needs to be more smooth and creamier in the mouthfeel, and have more oat character to improve on taste and drinkability. I probably won't buy their beer very often, but will gladly eat the food at Macinaw Brewing Company.

Reviewed on 6/27/2010. On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a small white head. Aroma of roasted malt plus an odd smell (cheese?). Flavor is sweet with some odd watermelon ice cream flavors plus roasted malt. Weird but drinkable. Overall, I'm not sure what was going on here...

Wife brought this one back with her from Michigan. It spent 8 hours in a cooler in a car. May or may not be a factor. Pour from the growler was awkward with the tiny loop on the jug (required 2 hands). Managed a 1/4" off white head that was gone almost instantly. Smells like chocolate milk. Hints of coffee and chocolate is the positive of the flavors up front. Ashtray and burnt flavors are apparent through the finish. Feel is rather thin and flat. Drinkbility; well, we will finish the growler. The sweetness grains and malts where not highlighted as expected in the style. Nothing really stood out to me in flavor, smell or feel; just kind of bland.

Had on tap at the brewery:

A: Looked good deep black with a thin tan head. There was no lacing within the beer and seemed t be very lightly carbonated.

S: Roasted aroma, but seemed a little off not sure what it was.

T: The beer starts very clean with the slight roasted flavor that soon turns into a repulsive vinegar taste that follows through to the end.

M: This beer does not have the smooth-creaminess that one expects from a oatmeal beer

D: The sourness from the vinegar soon starts to turn your stomach.

By the time I got to this one, the serving temperate was just right. Can clearly smell and taste the hints of chocolate, nuts, and oatmeal, but overwhelming or as good as the Highland Oatmeal stout I just reviewed last week. Drinkable enough for the style, but one that i would not order another, just too heavy on the stomach.

Ruby red, nearly black, somewhat light in color for the style. Forms a thin, beige head which quickly disappears. Medium-low carbonation. This beer used to be served on nitro and was much better in years past (perhaps a 3.75/5), but is now just not very drinkable. Again, lots of butterscotch, toffee and caramel secondary to the yeast strain, which is totally inappropriate for the style. Very little coffee or chocolate flavor or aroma, with no evident graininess. Sweet malt body with very obtrusive fusel alcohols throughout. Thin mouthfeel, and very little oat body or character. Long bitter finish and inappropriately high alcohol content severely hampers it's drinkability.
