A: Mahagoney red with a slight haze to it. Medium sized bubbles of a greenish beige nature make up the head.

S: Caramel, raspberries and eggo waffles.

T: Starts with over ripe red fruit and dirty bittering hops. Boring caramel malt with a metallic sense comes next. Finishes some what doughy and bitter.

M: Medium body, hard across the palate with a fuzzy mouthfeel.

D: Average beer. Not bad but will get lost in the crowd.

I'm a fan of Belmont Brewing Company. The food and beer will not let you down.
Top Sail is a likeable beer if you enjoy ambers, which I do.
One of the blends at this place that I like is the Penny Fogger - A blend of Top Sail & Crude. You can't find this in a bottle.

On draft at brewery, consumed on 11/12/07.

Medium, cloudy amber color with nice carbonation. Aroma is malty.

No detectable hop character up front. Slightly astringent with good caramel malt flavor, balanced with hoppy aftertatse.

Nice, if unremarkable.

Presentation: Sampled at Belmont Brewing Company, Long Beach during a lazy Sunday afternoon. I decided to head down and sample the Marathon, Top Sail and Long Beach Crude to while away a few hours. Served in a Pint Glass.

Appearance: Soft deep amber with a clear polished horse chestnut appearance. Slacking beige head stays ½” thick after the pour but soon fizzles a little and then quickly drops down to a thin covering, yet it remains, but only just.

Nose: Malt dominant but with a resident strength in the blend of aromas. Toasted with a hint of walnuts. Musty background and very “soft” on the nose. Bitter nose as it warms too.

Taste: Starts with a big toasted malt feel at first, but this soon changes to a mild nutty one with a very delicate sharpness. Hops only make a contribution towards the end and are a key part of the English Bitter style finish.

Mouthfeel: Middling carbonation with a freshly tapped tingle on the tongue. Average feel, nothing too filling, but it adequately supports the flavors. Creamy texture even thought the head died a little earlier than I would have liked.

Drinkability: A smooth drink that starts with a sessionable quality to it.

Overall: A whole degree stronger than the Marathon, but it doesn’t feel like it at times. Not that bad, but nothing Earth shattering either. The staple brew that I nearly always go for whilst at the BBC, and I will often take one of these if I am eating one of the spicy Pizza’s on offer unless the IPA is available. After the earlier Marathon, the Top Sail is a perfect middle-of-the-road gentle entrée to the finale for the afternoon, the Long Beach Crude.

On tap at Belmont Brewing Company in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear copper/amber color with a tan head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Tiny streaks of lace form randomly around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is the same with a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is easy drinking.

Presentation: 22 oz bomber. No freshness info on bottle, or any other information.

Appearance: Poured a rich amber color with a thick head. Head faded slowly to a thin lace on the top of the beer and the glass.

Smell: Caramel malt aroma with hints of hops.

Taste: Nice malt background with just enough hops to give a bitter finish. Nicely balanced and drinkable. Mouthfeel is good with a medium body and medium carbonation. Good hop flavor in the finish.

Overall impression: A very drinkable amber - nicely balanced. Quite tasty - would make a good session beer if you stock up on bombers or are hanging out at the brewery.
