I had this on tap at Magnolia brew pub in San Francisco, CA. It was listed at the time with a 10.0% ABV which is not what is listed on BA, but they may have beefed it up for Strong Beer Month (February). It poured with a huge (more than an inch) thick brown and foaming head. The smell - holy smell of alcohol! Alcohol! I'm a bit afraid to drink it, but here it goes...roasty flavor at the front...which then just turns into a huge wallop of alcohol. ouch. wow. lots of alcohol and not much else. And it looked so good!

Reviewed from notes taken @ the brewpub on 3/3/06. Listed as 9.1% ABV and 50 IBUs.

Pours a dark black color with a thin tan head. No lacing to speak of.

Aroma is sweet and malty with strong roasty and fruity smells. Plums, raisins, and cherries dance about.

Taste is sweet and malty upfront with dark roasted malts. This is followed by a complex fruitiness with plums, raisins, and cherries. Finishes quite sweet with a mild alcohol aftertaste.

Body is rich and full with solid cabonation. A meal in a glass.

Easily drinkable for the high ABV. A very nice RIS.

On tap at Alembic SF beer week.

A - Pours black with 1 finger of mocha head. Dissipates fast and leaves little lacing.

S/T - Chocolate and light caramel. That's it?

M - Full-bodied, well-balanced, and sweet.

D - Not bad. This beer had no distinguishing characteristics, no style. It fails to stand out.

Had on tap at Magnolia's strong beer month in February.

Body is jet black. Small tan head dissipates quickly to a fine ring. Some trace lacing on the glass.

Nose is roasted malt and brown sugar.

Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate.

Body is light with fizzy carbonation.

I though this was tasty and drinkable, but way on the light side for an RIS. The 11.1% ABV is matched by the flavor, but can hit you quickly.

Sampled on tap. Opaque black somewhat viscous beer with minimal head. Yummy nose with almond, cheery and cognac dominating. Prunes, raisins, plums and sweet chocolate flavors with a boozy finish.
