had a hand-labeled sample bottle dropped off from the local guardian rep a couple of weeks ago, and finally got around to trying this pale ale. foamed up out of the bottle initially, and gave off the most nose then. poured an opaque amber color, with minimal head. not much of a hop presence wafting from the glass, but i do detect some caramel malts and maybe a hint of orange rind. first taste was pleasant, with elements of bitterness balancing the malt body. when i went back in for another, i get more of a butterscotch thing, with all the bitterness on the back end in a less than pleasing way. the buttery notes seem like a flaw - diacetyl from what i remember in my home brew book. low carbonation reminds me of a home brew that wasn't properly primed. also just noticed that the homemade label says 4.7%.

Dark yellow, solid half inch of white head on the top, but the aroma was really devoid of hops.
Taste was bland, somewhat woody/earthy, questioning tap lines at this point. Still wondering where the hops are though even though I can feel bitterness and butterscotch in a very minimal way.
One of my least favorite Magnolia offerings.

This pours a rich, warm amber-caramel glow with great foaming. There’s a sharp piney character at first but it mellows out into a rounded forest-y aroma. I get a smooth, piney flavor profile. Pine and lemon nuances come across, balanced by a caramel note on the finish. It’s an easy drinker and I enjoy what the cask brings out in this.
