Ahh...the perfect pub. Snuff boxes behind the bar, pump clips and an extensive mug collection hanging from the ceiling and cask conditioned ales on tap. Not much more you can ask for.

The beer is in topnotch condition, featuring the standard Wadsworths range, as well as some rotating guest taps. By no means is the selection as large and varied as some American bars, but the quality level is high, and everyone should find something there to satisfy their tastes. I had an excellent bitter, yet for some reason plumped for a cider for my second. Nonetheless, the cider was nice.

The food has a great reputation, and justifiably so. I had a local pork pie with homemade chutney, and it was delectable. Likewise, my dad's choice of a warm round of cheese.

Of the countless pubs I’ve been to in England this is hands down the best.

Set in the stunningly beautiful totally unspoilt Cotswold village of Great Tew, which has a rather misleading adjective as it is quite small in size. But what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in outstanding historical interest. The whole village is preserved. We arrived before opening, such is our enthusiasm. A quick tour of the village took in the 20+ Thatched Cottages, the Thatched Store, the 14th Century Church & opposite this the Village Pub - The Falkland Arms Hotel.

Named after Viscount Falkland (17th Century Lord of the Manor) who was secretary to Charles I, but dating from the 16th Century, the Falkland Arms is simply gorgeous. This is no plastic-surgery perfect supermodel, but sheer unadulterated beauty with all its loving flaws. A 2-storey stone building with its original stone roof, plus a recent expansion into the thatched cottage to the left, forms the Pub. Covered in luscious green ivy & wisteria, as well as being surrounded by a small waist high hedge beset with Roses.

As you enter, you feel the instant coolness of the flagstone floors (even in the heat of summer), then hear the noise of the wooden floor. Your eyes slowly adjust to the dimly lit interior as you are drawn to the bar. The dimness is punctured by streaming light from the leaded windows which show airborne particles as you walk up to the ‘Olde World’ wooden bar – whilst stooping to avoid the hundreds of ceramic jugs, mugs & pewter tankards hanging from the low wooden beamed ceilings. High backed wooden settles, an awesome inglenook fireplace & a myriad of old fittings, including old lamps. At the Bar, regular beers are from Wadworths of Devices, they are 6X & IPA. In addition it serves 5 other Guest Beers from smaller independent Breweries. Ironically it usually has the highly excellent Donningtons BB from England’s most picturesque Brewery. Serves a Real Cider, Country Fruit Wines, Malt Whiskies & well, erm…. a massive range of Snuff & Clay Pipes!!! Serves lunchtime & evening meals (except Sundays).

If you end up having a session here, & you will be tempted to, you can also stay B&B here - but be careful, you may never want to leave this idyllic rural retreat.

This is truly a magical part of the English Countryside, nearby are the “Rollright Stones”, which were erected some 3,500 years ago.

The Falkland Arms Hotel has everything & much more.
Quite simply this IS..…

**THE** Quintessential English Country Pub.

An Unforgettable MUST!!
