A welcome IPA at the Great Australian Beer Spectapular but with the twist of lemon myrtle will it fail like Barons' LM wit?
Pours a burnished amber colour, with decent off-white head sinking to leave some nice dense lace. Not much bead, but a decent IPA look.
Smells quite nice. Plenty of lemon myrtle with a floral wattle kind of edge, backed up by nice citric hops which match surprisingly well. A bit of musty spice as well coming through, with rubber and mould notes. Decent, but could use more hop. It's still an IPA after all.
Taste is alright, yeah. Plenty of native bush characters with floral wattle notes coming through up front, backed up by lots of citric notes with sweet lemon edge towards the mid. Touch of aniseed spice on the back, licoricey with a slight spice to it, but nicely balanced with the hops. The native ingredients make the front an interesting experience, and the balanced proportions make the finish pleasant and enjoyable.
A bit thin on the body at times but a fair amount of texture. Not bad, but not hugely exciting.
I was a bit apprehensive about the concept of this beer but by using a beer as solid as the Beast IPA for a base, Jamieson have really pulled a rabbit out here. One of the big surprises of this festival.
Serving type: on-tap
